Reddit account suspended?
Updated 21 October 2026
A Reddit suspension is a decision by Reddit itself, not by a subreddit's moderators. It is either temporary, with an end date in the notice, or permanent. Read the notice, save it, and appeal through the link Reddit gives you. If you live in the EU, you also have a free internal complaint for at least six months and the option of a certified dispute body that lists Reddit.
What a suspension does
Reddit's help pages now call this a ban. You still see Reddit, with a message at the top about your status, but you cannot vote, post, comment, send chats, report content or use moderator tools and mod mail. If you are a moderator, your communities may need someone else to cover for you while it lasts.
A temporary suspension states its length. When it ends, your account works again without you doing anything. A permanent suspension has no end date. The two need different responses. For permanent ones, see permanently banned on Reddit.
Read the notice like a reviewer would
Your suspension message should say which rule Reddit relied on and, ideally, which content. If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act (Art. 17) requires a clear and specific statement of reasons: the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge it.
Ask yourself:
- Does it point to a specific post or comment, or only to a rule in general?
- Was the content yours, or posted while someone else had access?
- Could it have been read out of context, for example a quote, a joke within a community, or a reply to someone else?
These answers shape your appeal.
How to appeal well
- Screenshot everything first: the notice, the content if you can still see it, and the date.
- Use Reddit's own appeal link in the message. Do not post about your suspension in other communities with a second account.
- Keep it short and factual. Name the content, explain why it did not break the rule named, and give context a reviewer would not have. Leave out insults about moderators or Reddit.
- Write down the date you sent it. You will need it if you escalate.
If you live in the EU, your complaint must be handled in a timely, diligent and non-arbitrary way, and not by automated means alone. If it shows the decision was wrong, Reddit must reverse it without undue delay.
Don't make it worse
The most common way a short suspension becomes a long one is ban evasion: creating or using another account while suspended. Reddit treats this as a separate violation. The same goes for asking friends to post for you in a way that looks coordinated. Wait it out.
If Reddit keeps the suspension
If you live in the EU, you can take the decision to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body, even without finishing the internal appeal first. Platform Control lists Reddit. It is free or a nominal fee for you, decides within 90 days of receiving your complaint, and Reddit pays your reasonable costs if you win. The result is not binding, but Reddit must engage in good faith. You can still go to court.
Outside the EU, Reddit's appeal is your main route. The Reddit overview explains how a suspension differs from a subreddit ban.
A word on scams
Anyone who messages you offering to lift a Reddit suspension for money, or asks for your password, is not legitimate. Only Reddit can change its decision.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Reddit takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
Deadlines that are already running
- Reddit's help pages say you can appeal within six months of receiving the notice.
- Reddit's help pages say that if you don't have access to your account, you can email [email protected] from the email address you verified for it.
- Complaint to Reddit: open for at least six months from the day Reddit told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Reddit must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
What can I still do on Reddit while suspended?
Reddit's help pages, which now call this a ban, say you cannot vote, post, comment, send chats, report content or edit your posts. Moderators also lose their moderation tools and mod mail for that time.
How do I know if my Reddit suspension is temporary?
The suspension message normally states an end date or a number of days. If it says permanent or gives no end, treat it as permanent and appeal.
Will appealing make my Reddit suspension longer?
A calm, honest appeal does not count as a new rule breach. What can make things worse is opening another account or harassing the people you think reported you.
Does a Reddit suspension remove my karma or posts?
A suspension blocks activity. Content Reddit removed as part of the decision may disappear, but the action itself should be described in the notice. If it is not, ask for a clear statement of reasons.
