Permanently banned from Reddit?

Updated 21 October 2026

Why acting early matters: Reddit's help pages say you can appeal within six months of receiving the notice. The longer an account is down, the more followers, customers and conversations move on. See what is at stake

"Permanent" on Reddit means the suspension has no end date, not that every option is closed. You can still appeal through Reddit. If you live in the EU, you have a free internal complaint for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision, a certified dispute body (Platform Control lists Reddit), your data rights, and the courts. Do not open a new account while you use them.

What permanent means in practice

Reddit's help pages call this being permanently banned from Reddit, and your profile then shows visitors a message about it. It is a decision by Reddit. It is not a legal finding and not a ruling that cannot be looked at again. It simply means Reddit will not lift it on a timer.

If you live in the EU, it is still covered by the Digital Services Act like any other account decision:

Check first that it really is sitewide. If only one community calls it permanent, that is a subreddit ban by its moderators, and the rest of Reddit still works for you. The Reddit overview explains the difference.

Your options, in a sensible order

  1. Save everything. The notice, the date, your profile as visitors see it, and any content you can still see.
  2. Appeal through Reddit using the link in the notice. One clear, calm appeal: the content, why it did not break the named rule, and any context.
  3. Ask for your data. Under GDPR Art. 15 you can get a free copy of your personal data. Reddit must answer within one month, or up to two more months for complex requests if it explains why. This also preserves your post history.
  4. Go to a dispute body. Under DSA Art. 21 you can take the decision to a certified out-of-court body, with or without appealing first. Platform Control lists Reddit. It is free or a nominal fee for you, decides within 90 days of receiving your complaint, and Reddit pays your reasonable costs if you win. The decision is not binding, but Reddit must engage in good faith.
  5. Court remains possible throughout. Get proper legal advice before going that way.

Outside the EU, Reddit's appeal is the main route.

What makes a permanent ban stick

If you lose a community you built

If you moderated communities, the suspension may cost you your role there. Tell co-moderators outside Reddit so the community is looked after. Note the work you lose in your complaint: it shows why the decision matters to you. If you used Reddit for a brand or business, see Reddit business accounts.

And never pay someone who promises to lift a permanent Reddit ban. They cannot do it, and they often want your login.

What you stand to lose

A ban on Reddit takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.

  • Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
  • Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
  • The followers, subscribers or community you built
  • Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
  • Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account

Deadlines that are already running

  • Reddit's help pages say you can appeal within six months of receiving the notice.
  • Reddit's help pages say that if you don't have access to your account, you can email [email protected] from the email address you verified for it.
  • Complaint to Reddit: open for at least six months from the day Reddit told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
  • Copy of your data: free, and Reddit must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.

Questions people ask

Can a permanent Reddit suspension be reversed?

It can be reversed by Reddit, for example after an appeal. In the EU, Reddit must reverse a decision without undue delay if your complaint shows it was wrong. Nobody can guarantee the outcome.

Can I make a new Reddit account after a permanent ban?

Reddit treats new accounts created to get around a suspension as ban evasion. That can lead to the new account being suspended too and can weaken any complaint about the original decision.

What happens to my posts after a permanent Reddit ban?

Reddit decides what stays visible. If you live in the EU, you can ask for a free copy of your personal data under the GDPR, which is the safest way to keep a record of your history.

Is a permanent ban from a subreddit the same thing?

No. A permanent subreddit ban comes from that community's moderators and only covers that community. Your account still works everywhere else on Reddit.
