Restricted on Reddit?
Updated 21 October 2026
If your Reddit posts disappear, comments do not show to others, or messages stop working, first find out whether the limit comes from one subreddit or from Reddit itself. Community filters are set by moderators and are solved by reading the rules or contacting modmail. If Reddit itself limits your content and you live in the EU, it must tell you why, and you can complain for free.
Find the source of the restriction
Reddit has two layers that can hide your content, and they look similar from your side.
Community level. Subreddit moderators set rules and automatic filters. Common ones remove posts from new accounts, accounts with low karma, posts with certain links, or posts without a required flair. If your posts only vanish in one or two communities, this is the likely cause.
Platform level. Reddit itself can remove content, filter an account it flags for spam across the whole site, or add restrictions to an account. If your content is hidden everywhere, or you see a notice from Reddit rather than from a community, it is a platform decision.
A simple test: open your profile and a recent comment in a private browser window, logged out. If your activity is missing there everywhere, something sitewide is filtering it.
If it is one community
Read that community's rules and sidebar. Then send one short, polite modmail: which post, when, and a question about what you can change. Moderators are volunteers. A friendly message works better than a complaint. The EU rules in this article are written for Reddit's own decisions, so they are not the tool for a dispute with volunteer moderators.
If it is Reddit
If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act covers more than bans. When a platform limits the visibility of content, or restricts an account, Art. 17 requires a clear and specific statement of reasons: what was decided, the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge it.
So:
- Document it. Screenshots of your content from your own view and from a logged out view, with dates.
- Look for any notice in your inbox or account settings. Save it.
- Ask Reddit for the reasons if you received none, and use the free internal complaint route (Art. 20). It stays open for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision.
- Escalate if needed. You can take the decision to a certified dispute settlement body. Platform Control lists Reddit by name.
Outside the EU, use Reddit's help and appeal pages.
What not to do
- Don't delete and repost the same content many times. That can look like spam and trigger more filtering.
- Don't switch to a fresh account to get around a filter. Reddit can treat that as ban evasion.
- Don't buy karma or upvotes to get past community thresholds. That breaks Reddit's rules.
When a restriction turns into more
A restriction is sometimes the step before a suspension. If you later get a suspension notice, read Reddit account suspended. If you think the filtering started after your account was hacked or mass reported, see banned by mistake on Reddit. Either way, the free ban checker shows your deadlines.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Reddit takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
Deadlines that are already running
- Reddit's help pages say you can appeal within six months of receiving the notice.
- Reddit's help pages say that if you don't have access to your account, you can email [email protected] from the email address you verified for it.
- Complaint to Reddit: open for at least six months from the day Reddit told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Reddit must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
Am I shadowbanned on Reddit?
Reddit's help pages say that if an account is flagged for spam or inauthentic activity, its posts, comments, chat messages and profile may not show up as expected. Check by opening your profile while logged out. If you think the flag is a mistake, Reddit's appeals page has a form for it.
Why are my Reddit posts removed automatically?
Many subreddits use AutoModerator rules set by their moderators, such as minimum account age or karma. Those removals come from the community, not from Reddit, and the community's rules page or modmail is the place to ask.
Do EU rules apply if Reddit only hides my content?
Yes, if Reddit itself limits the visibility of your content and you live in the EU. The DSA requires a statement of reasons when a platform limits visibility, not only when it removes content or suspends an account.
Can my Reddit account be restricted from messaging?
Reddit's enforcement page says it can remove privileges from an account or add restrictions to it, and a ban stops you sending chats. If this happened without a message explaining why, keep a record and ask Reddit for the reasons.
