Reddit account disabled?
Updated 21 October 2026
If you cannot use your Reddit account, first find out which of three things happened: a security lock, a suspension for a rules breach, or a deleted account. A lock needs a password reset through Reddit's own site. A suspension can be appealed through Reddit and, if you live in the EU, challenged with your rights under the Digital Services Act. Save every message before you do anything else.
Work out what you are looking at
Reddit's help pages talk about banned, locked and disabled accounts. In practice you will see one of these:
- A security lock. Reddit asks you to reset your password, often after unusual logins. This is not a punishment. Reset it from reddit.com directly, never from a link in a message you did not expect.
- A ban from Reddit. You can log in, but a message at the top of the site or app and a note in your inbox say your account is banned, and you cannot post, comment or vote. This is a decision by Reddit about your account.
- A disabled account. You cannot log in and password resets fail. Reddit's help pages say to submit an inquiry about your account status.
- A missing account. The username shows as deleted or not found. Check whether you or someone with access deleted it. Your email inbox usually has a confirmation.
If only one community shuts you out, that is a subreddit ban by its moderators, not a disabled account. See the Reddit overview for how those differ.
If Reddit suspended you
Read the message carefully. It should name the rule and the content involved. Under the DSA (Art. 17), if you live in the EU, Reddit must give you a clear and specific statement of reasons: the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge the decision. If the message only says "violating the Content Policy" without saying what you did, note that in your appeal.
Then:
- Take screenshots of the notice, your inbox and your profile as others see it.
- Write down the date you were told. Your free internal complaint under DSA Art. 20 stays open for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision.
- Appeal through the link in the suspension message. Keep it short: what you posted, why it did not break the named rule, and any context a reviewer would not see.
- Do not open a second account. Reddit treats that as ban evasion, and it can turn a temporary suspension into a permanent one.
If the appeal does not work
You are not stuck with Reddit's answer. If you live in the EU you can take the decision to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body. Platform Control lists Reddit by name. It is free or costs a nominal fee for you, and it decides within 90 days of receiving your complaint. Read more on what to do after a denied appeal.
You can also ask for a free copy of your personal data under GDPR Art. 15. That can include the records behind the decision. Outside the EU, Reddit's own appeal is the main route.
Avoid the recovery scams
People who just lost an account are easy targets. Ignore anyone in your messages or on other sites who offers to "unban" a Reddit account for a fee or asks for your login. Nobody outside Reddit can reverse a suspension, and handing over your password can cost you the account for good. If your account was taken over before the action, read banned by mistake.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Reddit takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
Deadlines that are already running
- Reddit's help pages say you can appeal within six months of receiving the notice.
- Reddit's help pages say that if you don't have access to your account, you can email [email protected] from the email address you verified for it.
- Complaint to Reddit: open for at least six months from the day Reddit told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Reddit must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
Why does Reddit say my account is locked?
A lock is often a security measure, for example after a suspected compromise, and usually asks you to reset your password. That is different from a suspension for breaking the rules. Follow the reset link only from Reddit's own site or app.
Can a disabled Reddit account still be seen by others?
That depends on the action. Reddit's help pages say a permanent ban adds a message to your profile for visitors, while a temporary ban leaves your profile unchanged. Look at your profile while logged out to see what others see.
Can I get my Reddit posts back if the account stays disabled?
You can ask Reddit for a copy of your personal data under the GDPR if you live in the EU. Reddit must answer within one month, or up to two more months for complex requests if it tells you why.
Did I delete my own Reddit account by mistake?
If you chose to delete the account yourself, that is not a ban and the DSA appeal route does not apply. Check your email for a deletion confirmation before you file any appeal.
