Banned on Twitch?

On Twitch, first check who acted. If Twitch suspended your account, you appeal to Twitch, and if you live in the EU the Digital Services Act gives you a free complaint and other rights. If a streamer or their moderators banned you from a channel's chat, only that channel is affected and you ask that channel. For streamers, the money side matters too: keep a record of any payout that stops.

Why acting early matters: Twitch's help pages say you can appeal enforcements issued within the last six months, or your most recent one if you are serving an indefinite suspension. Appeals go only through appeals.twitch.tv. The longer an account is down, the more followers, customers and conversations move on. See what is at stake

How Twitch bans work

Who made the decision?

Twitch itself. Twitch can suspend an account for a period or indefinitely, remove content such as clips or videos, or limit features. Twitch tells you by email and shows the reason in its Appeals Portal. Since 2026, lighter breaches lead to a streaming or chatting suspension that only blocks those features. An indefinite suspension blocks the whole account, including earnings.

A channel's streamer or moderators. Every channel can time out or ban users from its chat. That is the channel's decision, not Twitch's. It does not touch your account elsewhere. Some channels have their own unban request process.

The DSA rights below are written for Twitch's own decisions. They are not a tool for disputes with an individual streamer's moderators.

What can happen on Twitch
  • Disabled: your account no longer works and you cannot log in or stream.
  • Suspended: a streaming, chatting or indefinite suspension, usually with an enforcement email.
  • Restricted: features limited, such as chat, streaming or discoverability, sometimes without a clear message.
  • Appeal denied: Twitch reviewed your appeal and kept the decision.
  • How long: how long suspensions and appeals take, and the legal time limits in the EU.
  • Permanently banned: what an indefinite suspension means and what you can still do.
  • Business account: Affiliates, Partners and creators who lose income or payouts.
  • Banned by mistake: hacked accounts, report waves, clips taken out of context and automated errors.
Your EU route against Twitch's decisions

If you live in the EU:

  1. Statement of reasons (DSA Art. 17). Twitch must tell you clearly what it decided, the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge it. This includes suspending or ending monetisation, not only suspending accounts.
  2. Internal complaint (DSA Art. 20). Free, for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision. A person must be involved, not automated means alone. If the decision was wrong, Twitch must reverse it without undue delay.
  3. Out-of-court dispute body (DSA Art. 21). You can go to a certified body, even without using the internal complaint first. No certified body lists Twitch by name yet, but general bodies may still take the case. Use the dispute body finder to check.
  4. Your data (GDPR Art. 15). A free copy of your personal data, answered within one month.
  5. Court. That right stays open.

Creators may also have rights under the P2B Regulation as business users, depending on the facts. These EU rules do not cover Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or the UK. Outside the EU, Twitch's appeal is your main route.

Stay safe while you wait

Don't stream or chat from a new account while suspended. Twitch treats that as ban evasion. Never give your login to anyone promising to "unban" you, and never pay for it. Save every email and start with the free ban checker.

What you stand to lose

A ban on Twitch takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.

  • Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
  • Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
  • The followers, subscribers or community you built
  • Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
  • Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account

On Twitch specifically

  • Bits and subscriptions you bought. Twitch's help pages say that during an indefinite suspension you can't use items you bought, such as Bits and subscriptions, and recurring subscriptions don't renew.
  • Your subscribers and monetization. Twitch's help pages say a monetized streamer can't use monetization tools during an indefinite suspension, and existing subscriptions to the channel don't renew.

Deadlines that are already running

  • Twitch's help pages say you can appeal enforcements issued within the last six months, or your most recent one if you are serving an indefinite suspension. Appeals go only through appeals.twitch.tv.
  • Complaint to Twitch: open for at least six months from the day Twitch told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
  • Copy of your data: free, and Twitch must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.

Ban messages explained

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a Twitch suspension and a channel ban?

A suspension is Twitch's own decision and affects your whole account. A channel ban is set by a streamer or their moderators and only stops you chatting in that channel. You appeal a suspension to Twitch and a channel ban to that channel.

How do I appeal a Twitch suspension?

Twitch emails you about the decision, and you appeal in its Appeals Portal at appeals.twitch.tv, which works even while you are suspended. If you live in the EU, you also have a free internal complaint for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision.

Is there a dispute body for Twitch?

No certified out-of-court dispute settlement body lists Twitch by name yet. General certified bodies may still accept a Twitch case, so check with them before you rule this route out.

What happens to my Twitch earnings during a suspension?

That depends on your agreement and the action taken. Read your enforcement notice and your Affiliate or Partner terms, and keep a dated record of any payout that is held or missing.
