Banned on Telegram?

On Telegram, start with what you see. A limited account can only message your contacts for a while: appeal through @SpamBot. A frozen account can read but not send, and Telegram's help pages say it is deleted unless you appeal before the date shown in the app. "This phone number is banned" means you can't sign in. If you live in the EU, Telegram must explain any restriction or suspension of your account.

Why acting early matters: Telegram's app says a frozen account will be deleted unless you appeal through @SpamBot before the date it shows. Telegram's pages name no other time limit. The longer an account is down, the more followers, customers and conversations move on. See what is at stake

How Telegram bans work

What Telegram can do

Telegram's DSA page says it can suspend some functions of your account, for a time or for good. Its examples are messaging people who likely don't know you, and creating or joining public communities. For serious violations, its moderators can block or delete users, bots, posts, channels and groups. Telegram can also put a FAKE or SCAM label on a public profile.

In practice you will meet these:

  • Limited account. A spam limit. You can still message people who saved your number and reply to anyone who writes first.
  • No public groups. A message says you are restricted from posting to public groups.
  • Frozen account. Read only, with an appeal deadline in the app.
  • Banned phone number. You can't sign in at all.
  • Removed channel, group or bot. The community or bot is gone or blocked.
What can happen on Telegram
  • Disabled: you can't sign in, often with "This phone number is banned."
  • Suspended: your account is frozen and you can only read.
  • Restricted: a spam limit, or no posting in public groups.
  • Appeal denied: @SpamBot or the in-app appeal kept the decision.
  • How long: how long limits and freezes last, and the legal time limits in the EU.
  • Permanently banned: what "forever" means on Telegram and what you can still do.
  • Business account: channel owners and admins who earn from their channel.
  • Banned by mistake: recycled numbers, hacked accounts, report waves.
Your EU route against Telegram

Telegram is different from most social apps. It says its service is mainly private messaging, and that only some non-essential parts may count as an "online platform" under the Digital Services Act. It does not name them there, but its DSA reports give online-platform figures only for public channels and groups. That decides which rules you can use. If you live in the EU:

  1. Statement of reasons (DSA Art. 17). This is your firm ground in every case. When Telegram restricts or suspends your account, it must tell you the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge it.
  2. Internal complaint (DSA Art. 20). Free, for at least six months, not decided by automated means alone. This clearly applies when the decision concerns a public channel or group, or an account banned for what it did there. For a spam limit on private messages only, it may not apply.
  3. Dispute body (DSA Art. 21). The same scope as Art. 20.
  4. Your data (GDPR Art. 15). A free copy of your personal data, answered within one month. This applies in every case.
  5. Court. That right stays open.

Telegram is not a very large online platform. Its DSA contact point for users is the @EURegulation bot. The provider is Telegram Messenger Inc. Its EU representatives sit in Brussels, but Telegram says the DSA representative only handles requests from authorities.

Dispute bodies

No body on the European Commission's list names Telegram. Some certified bodies list Telegram on their own sites. Use the dispute body finder and ask the body first whether it takes your case.

Outside the EU

These rules protect people who live in the EU. Not Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or the UK. Elsewhere, Telegram's own appeal through @SpamBot or the app is your main route.

Things to avoid

Scams around Telegram bans are everywhere. Fake bots copy the names of @SpamBot and @EURegulation with one letter changed. Sellers offer to "unban" accounts or sell "clean" numbers. Never pay them and never share your login code or your two-step password. Don't buy or borrow a number to get around a ban: platforms treat that as evading it. Save screenshots of every notice, then run the free ban checker to see your dates.

What you stand to lose

A ban on Telegram takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.

  • Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
  • Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
  • The followers, subscribers or community you built
  • Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
  • Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account

On Telegram specifically

  • Telegram's developer pages say frozen accounts are deleted after a set time, unless an appeal is submitted and accepted.
  • Your Stars. Telegram's Stars terms say that if your account is terminated, your remaining Star balance is forfeit and Telegram does not compensate you.
  • Telegram Premium and Telegram Business. Telegram's terms say a ban can mean you lose their benefits, with no compensation.
  • Channel earnings. Telegram's creator terms say that if you lose access to your account or channel, all pending balances are forfeit.
  • Usernames bought on Fragment. Fragment's terms say it may become impossible to link a collectible username to a restricted or deleted account, though you still own it.

Deadlines that are already running

  • Telegram's app says a frozen account will be deleted unless you appeal through @SpamBot before the date it shows. Telegram's pages name no other time limit.
  • Copy of your data: free, and Telegram must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a limited and a frozen Telegram account?

A limited account can still message contacts and reply to people who write first. It only can't start chats with strangers. A frozen account is read only: you see your chats but can't send anything, and Telegram's help pages say it is deleted unless you appeal before the date shown in the app.

Is there a dispute body for Telegram?

No body on the European Commission's list names Telegram. Some certified bodies list Telegram on their own sites. Use the dispute body finder and ask the body first whether it takes your case.

How do I contact Telegram about the Digital Services Act?

Telegram names the @EURegulation bot as its single point of contact for users under the DSA. Apart from a web form for reporting illegal content, it gives no email address or form for users. Its legal representative in Brussels says it only handles requests from authorities.

Can I pay someone to unban my Telegram account?

No. Bots and sellers who promise to lift a Telegram ban for money are a common scam. Telegram's own routes are free: @SpamBot for limits and frozen accounts, and @EURegulation for DSA and data requests.
