How long does a Reddit suspension last?
Updated 21 October 2026
A temporary Reddit suspension lasts as long as your notice says. Reddit does not publish a fixed time for appeal answers, so nobody can honestly promise you a number. If you live in the EU, a few time limits are set by law: your free complaint window is at least six months, a certified dispute body decides within 90 days, and a data request must be answered within one month.
The suspension itself
Look at the notice in your Reddit inbox. Reddit's help pages say it gives the reason and, for a temporary ban, how long it lasts. Reddit also describes a usual ladder for repeated breaches: a warning, then a 3 day ban, a 7 day ban and a permanent ban, while serious breaches can skip steps. You can appeal within six months if you think it was wrong.
A permanent suspension has no end date. It does not expire, so waiting will not help. Appeal instead. See permanently banned on Reddit.
A subreddit ban is a different thing. Its length is set by that community's moderators and only covers that one community.
How long an appeal takes
Reddit does not publish a guaranteed response time for appeals, and experiences vary. Be wary of any site that claims a typical number of days. What you can control:
- Send one clear appeal, not several. Duplicate appeals do not move you up a queue.
- Keep a copy and the date you sent it.
- Check the inbox of your Reddit account and the email linked to it.
If you live in the EU, Reddit must handle your complaint in a timely, diligent and non-arbitrary way, with a person involved. The law does not set a number of days for this step.
The time limits that are fixed by law
These apply if you live in the EU:
- At least six months to use the free internal complaint, counted from the day you were told about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- 90 days for a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body to decide, counted from receiving your complaint (DSA Art. 21). In very complex cases it can take up to 90 days longer. Platform Control lists Reddit.
- One month for Reddit to answer a request for a copy of your personal data (GDPR Art. 15). It can extend by up to two more months for complex requests if it tells you why.
- Without undue delay: if your complaint shows the decision was wrong, Reddit must reverse it without undue delay.
Use the deadline calculator to turn these into real dates for your case.
What to do while you wait
- Save the notice, the appeal you sent, and the dates.
- Don't post with another account. Reddit treats that as ban evasion, and it can reset or extend your suspension.
- If you moderate communities, let your co-moderators know you are unavailable, from a channel outside Reddit.
- If no answer comes and you live in the EU, you do not have to keep waiting. You can go to a dispute body at any point.
When waiting is the wrong move
If the action was caused by a hack or a wave of false reports, act now rather than waiting out the clock. Secure your email and password, then read banned by mistake on Reddit. For an overview of the whole process, go back to the Reddit hub.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Reddit takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
Deadlines that are already running
- Reddit's help pages say you can appeal within six months of receiving the notice.
- Reddit's help pages say that if you don't have access to your account, you can email [email protected] from the email address you verified for it.
- Complaint to Reddit: open for at least six months from the day Reddit told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Reddit must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
How long is a temporary Reddit suspension?
The length is set in your suspension notice. Reddit does not publish one fixed length for every case, so the number in your own message is the one that counts.
How long does Reddit take to answer an appeal?
Reddit does not publish a guaranteed response time, and it varies. If you live in the EU, the law requires a timely and diligent answer, but it does not set a number of days for the internal complaint.
How long does a subreddit ban last?
Moderators choose the length. Their ban message usually says whether it is temporary or permanent. If it does not, ask them politely through modmail.
What is the deadline to complain about a Reddit decision in the EU?
The free internal complaint must be available for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision. A certified dispute body does not depend on that window, but acting early keeps your evidence fresh.
