Banned on WhatsApp?
If WhatsApp says "This phone number can't use WhatsApp", tap Request review in the app soon. WhatsApp's help pages say that if you don't see that option, the ban is final. If you live in the EU, you can also ask for your data and point to WhatsApp's own terms. They say ending the service for a breach needs a chance to fix it or a warning first, unless special circumstances apply.

How WhatsApp bans work
What WhatsApp can do to an account
- Ban the number. You can't use WhatsApp with it, and you can't reach your chats or backups while it is banned.
- Ban it temporarily. WhatsApp's help pages link a "Temporarily banned" message to unofficial apps or scraping.
- Restrict the account. For a while you can't start chats or calls with new contacts, create groups, add members or use linked devices. It ends on its own.
- Act on a channel. Remove channel content or ban a channel admin.
WhatsApp says it bans accounts for things like spam, scams or putting users' safety at risk. Bulk, automated or unwanted messages are the usual trigger.
Your EU route: narrower than on other platforms
WhatsApp Ireland Limited provides WhatsApp in the EU. The European Commission designated WhatsApp a very large online platform on 26 January 2026, but only because of WhatsApp Channels. It says private messaging is excluded from the online platform rules. For a ban over your chats, that matters:
- Request review in the app. Your main route, for every ban.
- Your data (GDPR Art. 15). A free copy of your personal data, answered within one month. You can also ask whether an automated decision was made about you (GDPR Art. 22). WhatsApp says its systems automate some decisions.
- WhatsApp's own terms. WhatsApp's terms for the European Region say it may end the service for a breach only after a chance to fix it or a warning, unless special circumstances apply.
- Statement of reasons (DSA Art. 17). You can ask for one. For a ban over private messages it is not certain the rule applies.
- Complaint and dispute body (DSA Art. 20 and 21). These clearly apply to Channels decisions. For a ban over private messages they probably don't.
- Court. Always stays open.
WhatsApp's EU contact form covers "WhatsApp and WhatsApp channels" requests, so you can use it to ask for reasons or your data.
Dispute bodies
No body on the Commission's list names WhatsApp. Impress Dispute Resolutions lists WhatsApp Channels on its own site, for illegal content only. So no body clearly takes WhatsApp account bans. For a decision about a channel, check the dispute body finder.
These rules protect people who live in the EU only, not Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or the UK. Elsewhere the in-app review is your main route.
Watch out for scams
Never pay anyone who offers to "unban" your number. Never share the six digit code WhatsApp sends you by text, whoever asks. And don't switch to an unofficial WhatsApp app: that can get a number banned in the first place. Start with the free checker.
What you stand to lose
A ban on WhatsApp takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On WhatsApp specifically
- WhatsApp's help pages say you can't access your chat history or backups while your account is banned. You can only get to a backup after the phone number tied to it is unbanned.
- Your Meta Verified subscription. WhatsApp's help pages say a banned business account automatically loses it, and for some violations the subscription is cancelled without a refund.
- Your business profile. WhatsApp's Business App Terms say that on termination WhatsApp removes your account profile and keeps the account data for up to 90 days.
Deadlines that are already running
- Copy of your data: free, and WhatsApp must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
Is there a dispute body for WhatsApp bans?
No body on the European Commission's list names WhatsApp. Impress Dispute Resolutions lists WhatsApp Channels on its own site, but only for illegal content cases. So no body clearly takes a WhatsApp account ban. For a decision about a channel, use the dispute body finder.
Does the Digital Services Act cover WhatsApp?
Partly. The European Commission designated WhatsApp a very large online platform because of WhatsApp Channels. It says private messaging is excluded from the online platform rules. So the full DSA complaint route clearly covers Channels, not a ban over your chats.
Can someone unban my WhatsApp number for money?
No. Services that promise to unban a number are a scam. WhatsApp's own review is free and only runs inside the app. Never share the six digit code WhatsApp sends you by text: whoever has it can take over your account.
