Reddit appeal denied?
Updated 21 October 2026
A denied appeal is Reddit's own final word, but not the end of your options. If you live in the EU, you can take the decision to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body such as Platform Control, which lists Reddit. You can also ask Reddit for a proper statement of reasons, request your data under the GDPR, and keep the right to go to court.
First, read the rejection carefully
Save the rejection and the original suspension notice side by side. Check:
- Does Reddit name the rule and the specific content it relied on?
- Does it say whether automated tools were used?
- Did it explain how you can challenge the decision further?
If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act (Art. 17) requires all of that in the statement of reasons. Gaps here are worth pointing out in your next step. Also check whether your appeal looks like it was read by a person: Art. 20 says complaints must not be decided by automated means alone.
Option 1: a certified dispute settlement body
Under DSA Art. 21, you can bring Reddit's decision to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body. Important points:
- Platform Control lists Reddit by name. General bodies may also accept the case.
- It is free or a nominal fee for you.
- If you win, Reddit pays the fees and your reasonable costs.
- The body decides within 90 days of receiving your complaint.
- The decision is not binding, but Reddit must engage in good faith.
You did not have to use Reddit's appeal first, and a denied appeal does not close this door. Use the dispute body finder to see which bodies fit.
Option 2: ask for your data
Under GDPR Art. 15, you can ask Reddit for a free copy of your personal data. Reddit must answer within one month, or up to two more months for complex requests if it tells you why. The copy can show what was recorded about your account and the content involved, which helps you build your case. The deadline calculator helps you track the dates.
Option 3: court
Your right to go to court stays open whatever happens with the appeal or a dispute body. For most people this is a last step, and you would want proper legal advice first. We are not lawyers.
Build a clean file
Whichever route you pick, put these together:
- The original notice and the rejection, with dates.
- The content in question, or your best description of it.
- Why it did not break the rule Reddit named, in a few sentences.
- Any context: was it a quote, a reply, a post in a community where it was on topic, or activity from someone who had your login?
- What the action costs you, for example a community you moderate or years of history.
What not to do now
Don't open a new account to keep posting. Reddit treats that as ban evasion, and it can undermine your complaint. Don't pay anyone who claims a contact inside Reddit.
If you are outside the EU, the options above do not apply in the same way, and Reddit's own process is your main route. If your account was suspended permanently, see permanently banned on Reddit, and if the action came after a hack, see banned by mistake.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Reddit takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
Deadlines that are already running
- Reddit's help pages say you can appeal within six months of receiving the notice.
- Reddit's help pages say that if you don't have access to your account, you can email [email protected] from the email address you verified for it.
- Complaint to Reddit: open for at least six months from the day Reddit told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Reddit must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
Can I appeal again after Reddit denies my appeal?
Sending the same appeal again rarely changes anything. If you live in the EU, the stronger next step is a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body, which looks at the case from outside Reddit.
Which dispute body handles Reddit?
Platform Control is a certified body that lists Reddit by name. Other general bodies may also take the case. Use the dispute body finder to compare them.
Does a dispute body cost money?
For you it is free or a nominal fee. If the body decides in your favour, Reddit pays the fees and your reasonable costs.
Is the dispute body's decision binding on Reddit?
No, it is not binding. But Reddit must engage with the body in good faith, and a reasoned outside decision in your favour is a strong document to have.
