Banned on Reddit?
On Reddit, first work out who made the decision. If Reddit itself suspended your account, you can appeal to Reddit and, if you live in the EU, use the rights in the Digital Services Act (DSA). If a subreddit's moderators banned you, only that community is affected and the first step is a polite message to its moderators.

- Appeal deniedYou appealed and they kept the decision.

How Reddit bans work
Two very different kinds of ban
Sitewide action by Reddit. Reddit's safety teams or automated systems can suspend an account for a set period or permanently, restrict what it can do, or remove content. These are platform decisions. Reddit's help pages now call this a ban from Reddit, and the inbox notice says which rule was broken, what was done and how to appeal.
Subreddit bans by moderators. Each community is run by volunteer moderators with their own rules. They can ban you from posting there, often with a short note in your inbox. This is not Reddit deciding about your account, and the DSA rights below are written for the platform's own decisions, not for volunteer moderators. Your best route is modmail: one calm message, no arguing.
The tricky part: dodging a subreddit ban with a second account can turn a small community ban into a sitewide suspension. Reddit's help pages describe this as ban evasion.
What can happen to a Reddit account
- Disabled: you cannot use the account at all and the message does not give an end date.
- Suspended: a temporary or permanent suspension, usually with a notice in your inbox.
- Restricted: posts removed, comments hidden, or reach that dropped without a clear message.
- Appeal denied: Reddit reviewed your appeal and kept the decision.
- How long: how long Reddit takes to review, and the legal time limits that apply in the EU.
- Permanently banned: what a permanent suspension means and what you can still do.
- Business account: brands, moderators of brand communities and advertisers who lose access.
- Banned by mistake: hacked accounts, report waves and automated errors.
Your EU route against Reddit's decisions
If you live in the EU, these rules apply when Reddit itself acts against your account or content:
- Statement of reasons (DSA Art. 17). Reddit must tell you clearly what it decided, which rule it relied on, the facts, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge it. A vague message is worth pointing out.
- Internal complaint (DSA Art. 20). You can complain through Reddit's own system, free, for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision. A person must be involved: it cannot be handled by automated means alone.
- Out-of-court dispute body (DSA Art. 21). You can take the case to a certified body, even without using the internal complaint first. Platform Control lists Reddit by name. If you win, Reddit pays the fees and your reasonable costs. The decision is not binding, but Reddit must engage in good faith.
- Your data (GDPR Art. 15). You can ask for a free copy of your personal data, which can show what Reddit recorded about the decision.
- Court. Your right to go to court stays open throughout.
These rules protect people who live in the EU. They do not cover Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or the UK. Outside the EU, Reddit's own appeal is your main route. Use the dispute body finder to see which bodies take your case.
Stay safe while you wait
Never give your password to anyone who promises to "recover" a Reddit account, and never pay for it. Nobody outside Reddit can lift a suspension. Keep screenshots of every message, note the dates, and start with the free ban checker to see your deadlines and next step.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Reddit takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
Deadlines that are already running
- Reddit's help pages say you can appeal within six months of receiving the notice.
- Reddit's help pages say that if you don't have access to your account, you can email [email protected] from the email address you verified for it.
- Complaint to Reddit: open for at least six months from the day Reddit told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Reddit must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between a Reddit suspension and a subreddit ban?
A suspension is a decision by Reddit itself and affects your whole account. A subreddit ban is a decision by that community's volunteer moderators and only stops you taking part in that one community. They have different appeal routes.
Can I appeal a Reddit suspension?
Yes. Reddit offers an appeal for account actions, and if you live in the EU the Digital Services Act also gives you a free internal complaint for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision. You can also go to a certified dispute settlement body.
Is there a dispute body that handles Reddit cases?
Yes. Platform Control is a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body that lists Reddit. It is free or costs a nominal fee for you, and it decides within 90 days of receiving your complaint.
Should I make a new Reddit account while I am suspended?
No. Reddit treats a new account used to get around a suspension or a subreddit ban as ban evasion, which can lead to further suspensions. Wait for the outcome of your appeal instead.
