Banned on Reddit by mistake?
Updated 21 October 2026
If Reddit suspended you for something you did not do, say so clearly in your appeal and back it up with dates and evidence. Hacked accounts, waves of false reports, spam filters catching normal sharing, and automated mistakes all happen. If you live in the EU, Reddit must explain its decision, let a person review your complaint, and reverse a wrong decision without undue delay.
Find out which kind of mistake it is
Different mistakes need different evidence:
- Your account was taken over. Someone else posted spam, scams or abuse. You may have seen password reset emails, logins from new places, or posts you did not write.
- A report wave. You posted in a heated thread, and suddenly the action arrived. Reports start reviews, but reports alone do not prove a rule was broken.
- Spam detection. You shared your own blog, shop or project in several communities, and the pattern looked like spam to an automated system.
- Context lost. A quote, a joke within a community, or a reply that only made sense in the thread was read on its own.
- Mixed up identity. Someone with a similar username was the real target, or a shared device or network linked your account to someone else's.
If you were hacked
Act on security first, appeal second:
- Secure the email linked to your Reddit account. Change its password.
- Reset your Reddit password from reddit.com directly.
- Turn on two factor authentication in your Reddit settings.
- Note the dates of anything unusual: login alerts, reset emails, the first post you did not make.
- In your appeal, say the account was compromised, list the content that was not yours, and say what you have done to secure it.
How to show it was a mistake
A good appeal answers the question a reviewer has in mind: "Why should I change this?"
- Name the content the decision is about, if you know it.
- Give the missing context in two or three sentences.
- Attach or describe evidence: screenshots of the thread, the security emails, your normal posting history.
- Stay calm. Accusing the people who reported you rarely helps.
If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act (Art. 17) requires a clear statement of reasons, including whether automated tools were used. If the notice is vague, ask which content and which rule. Your free internal complaint (Art. 20) stays open for at least six months, and it cannot be decided by automated means alone.
If Reddit still gets it wrong
You can take the decision to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body. Platform Control lists Reddit. It is free or a nominal fee for you, decides within 90 days of receiving your complaint, and Reddit pays your reasonable costs if you win. You can also ask for a free copy of your data under GDPR Art. 15, which can show what activity Reddit linked to your account. See Reddit appeal denied for the full picture.
Outside the EU, Reddit's appeal is the main route.
Two things to avoid
Don't create a new account while you wait. Reddit treats it as ban evasion, even if the first suspension was a mistake, and it makes your case harder to argue. And don't trust anyone who offers to fix a Reddit ban for money or asks for your login. For the basics of a suspension, see Reddit account suspended.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Reddit takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
Deadlines that are already running
- Reddit's help pages say you can appeal within six months of receiving the notice.
- Reddit's help pages say that if you don't have access to your account, you can email [email protected] from the email address you verified for it.
- Complaint to Reddit: open for at least six months from the day Reddit told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Reddit must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
My Reddit account was hacked and then suspended. What do I do?
Secure your email first, then reset your Reddit password from Reddit's own site. In your appeal, say the account was compromised, give the dates, and point out the activity that was not yours.
Can mass reporting get my Reddit account suspended?
Reports trigger reviews, and a wave of them can lead to an action, especially if automated tools are involved. Many reports do not prove a rule was broken. Ask which content and which rule the decision relied on.
Why was I suspended for spam when I only shared my own work?
Reddit's spam rules name patterns such as mass posting repetitive content or links to your own business. Explain what you posted, where and how often, and show that you also took part in discussions.
Can I prove a Reddit decision was automated?
If you live in the EU, the statement of reasons must say whether automated tools were used. You can also ask for your data under the GDPR. Both can help show how the decision was made.
