Reddit says your account is permanently banned
This account has been permanently banned from Reddit
Messages like "This account has been permanently banned from Reddit" mean Reddit itself, not a subreddit's moderators, has stopped your account from posting, commenting, voting and sending chats with no end date. Reddit used to call this a permanent suspension. You can still appeal. Screenshot the message, follow the appeal steps in it, and if you live in the EU, use your free complaint and dispute rights.
What this message means
Reddit decided your account broke its sitewide rules, now called the Reddit Rules. A permanent ban has no end date. You still see Reddit, with a banner about your status, but you cannot take part. Reddit says the inbox notice explains how you broke the rules, what it did and how to appeal. Common reasons are harassment, spam, ban evasion and vote manipulation.
What it does not mean
- It does not mean a volunteer moderator decided it. This is Reddit's decision.
- It does not mean the case is closed. Permanent describes Reddit's decision, not your options.
- It does not mean every account you ever used is affected, unless Reddit links them.
What to do now
- Screenshot the message in your inbox and any banner, with the date.
- Read which rule is named. Note the content it points to, if any.
- Follow the appeal steps in the message. Be short and specific: what you posted, the context, why it does not break the rule.
- Do not use another account to post or comment. Reddit treats that as ban evasion and it can make things worse.
- Save your own content you care about, by copying what you can still see.
- Note every date: the suspension, your appeal, any reply.
If you suspect you were reported by a group or flagged by mistake, read Reddit banned by mistake.
The EU route
If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act (DSA) applies to Reddit's own decisions:
- Reddit must give a clear statement of reasons: the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge it.
- You can file a free internal complaint for at least six months, not handled by automated means alone. A wrong decision must be reversed without undue delay.
- Platform Control is a certified dispute body that lists Reddit. You can go there without the internal complaint first. It decides within 90 days of receiving your complaint. If you win, Reddit pays the fees and your reasonable costs.
- The GDPR gives you a free copy of your personal data within one month.
- Court stays open.
Outside the EU, Reddit's appeal form is the main route. More on the Reddit page.
Watch out for scams
Nobody outside Reddit can lift a suspension. Ignore offers to "restore" your account for money or in exchange for your password.
Questions people ask
What can I still do on a permanently banned Reddit account?
Reddit's help pages say you cannot vote, post, comment, send chats, report content or edit your posts while banned. A permanent ban also adds a message to your profile for visitors. Your old posts may stay visible.
How do I appeal a permanent suspension on Reddit?
The notice in your Reddit inbox explains how to appeal, and Reddit accepts appeals within six months. Write a short, factual appeal. If you live in the EU, you also have a free internal complaint and a certified dispute body.
Is a subreddit ban the same as a permanent suspension?
No. A subreddit ban comes from volunteer moderators and only covers one community. A permanent suspension is Reddit's own decision about your whole account.
