Banned on Telegram by mistake?
Updated 21 October 2026
If Telegram limited, froze or banned you for something you didn't do, appeal through @SpamBot and make the mistake easy to see: when you got the number, when a hack happened, who reported you. Telegram's DSA page says that if it made a mistake, it will lift or update the restriction and tell you. In the EU, you can also ask for the exact reasons.
Common mistakes on Telegram
A recycled number. Phone numbers get reused. Telegram's spam FAQ says some numbers trigger an overly harsh response because of what a previous owner did. If your account was limited soon after you got a new number, that may be why.
A virtual or VoIP number. The same FAQ says such numbers can trigger the same harsh response.
A hacked account. Someone took over your account and sent spam or scam links. The reports were about messages you never wrote.
A report wave. Telegram's FAQ says accounts restricted because of reports from other users are frozen. A group that dislikes you can report you together.
A community abused by others. Telegram's creator terms say that if others abuse a community, moderators may close it for a time. Admins can be hit by what members post.
Age. Telegram's terms say users in EU countries must be at least 18 to sign up. If your account was flagged as underage and you are not, you need proof of age you are willing to share.
Build your proof
Collect this before you appeal:
- Screenshots of every notice and @SpamBot answer, with the date.
- Number history. The date you got the number, for example from your phone contract or the SIM receipt.
- Hack timeline. When you noticed, which sessions you didn't recognise, what you changed and when.
- Report wave. Any public posts or messages showing people planned to report you.
- Context. Who you wrote to and why the messages were wanted, such as a customer who asked first.
How to appeal
Use @SpamBot for limits and frozen accounts, and check the bot's name carefully. For a banned channel, bot or sticker set, Telegram's FAQ points to [email protected]. Write in plain words:
- what happened, with dates,
- why it was not you, or not a rule break,
- what proof you have,
- what you are asking for: lift the limit, unfreeze the account, restore the channel.
Keep to one clear message. Telegram's 2024/25 transparency report says moderator decisions can be reversed when a user says they were restricted by mistake, and its DSA page says critical restrictions need a human moderator.
Your EU rights
If you live in the EU:
- Statement of reasons (DSA Art. 17). For any restriction or suspension of your account. Ask through @EURegulation if you got no real explanation. This is the firm step in every case.
- Your data (GDPR Art. 15). A free copy within one month. It can show what Telegram recorded.
- Complaint and dispute body (DSA Art. 20 and 21). These clearly apply if the decision concerns public channels or groups, or your account was banned for what happened there. For a limit on private messages only, they may not apply. No body on the Commission list names Telegram, but some list it on their own sites. Use the dispute body finder and ask first.
- Court. That right stays.
Outside the EU, @SpamBot and Telegram's support are your route.
Secure the account first
If you were hacked, end sessions you don't know, set a two-step password, and check which bots and apps have access. Never share your login code. Don't start a second account while the first is under review.
For the limit itself, read Telegram account limited. For a freeze, see Telegram account suspended. More on the Telegram hub.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Telegram takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On Telegram specifically
- Telegram's developer pages say frozen accounts are deleted after a set time, unless an appeal is submitted and accepted.
- Your Stars. Telegram's Stars terms say that if your account is terminated, your remaining Star balance is forfeit and Telegram does not compensate you.
- Telegram Premium and Telegram Business. Telegram's terms say a ban can mean you lose their benefits, with no compensation.
- Channel earnings. Telegram's creator terms say that if you lose access to your account or channel, all pending balances are forfeit.
- Usernames bought on Fragment. Fragment's terms say it may become impossible to link a collectible username to a restricted or deleted account, though you still own it.
Deadlines that are already running
- Telegram's app says a frozen account will be deleted unless you appeal through @SpamBot before the date it shows. Telegram's pages name no other time limit.
- Copy of your data: free, and Telegram must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
Why was my new Telegram account limited before I did anything?
Telegram's spam FAQ says some numbers trigger an overly harsh response, either because of what a previous owner did or because they are virtual or VoIP numbers. Tell @SpamBot when you got the number.
Can people get my Telegram account frozen by mass reporting?
Telegram's FAQ says accounts restricted because of reports from other users are frozen, and moderators review appeals. Reports alone shouldn't decide it. If you think a group reported you together, say so in your appeal.
Will Telegram admit a mistake?
Telegram's DSA page says that if it made a mistake, it will lift or update the restriction and tell you. Its FAQ says a frozen account is unfrozen if the restriction was a mistake. Your job is to make the mistake easy to see.
My account was hacked and sent spam. What now?
Secure it first: end unknown sessions and set a two-step password. Then appeal through @SpamBot with the date you noticed the hack and what you changed.
