Permanently banned on Telegram?

Updated 21 October 2026

Why acting early matters: Telegram's app says a frozen account will be deleted unless you appeal through @SpamBot before the date it shows. Telegram's pages name no other time limit. The longer an account is down, the more followers, customers and conversations move on. See what is at stake

On Telegram, "permanent" can mean two things: you lost the ability to message strangers for good, or the whole account is banned or deleted. Either way, it is a decision you can still challenge. If you live in the EU, ask for the reasons and a copy of your data, and use a dispute body where the decision concerns public channels or groups. Court stays open.

What "permanent" looks like on Telegram

A platform can call a decision permanent. That doesn't put it beyond review. If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act (Art. 17) still requires Telegram to give you a clear and specific statement of reasons for any restriction or suspension of your account: the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge it.

If the decision concerns public channels or groups, or your account was banned for what you did there:

If the decision is a limit on private messages only, Art. 20 and 21 may not apply. Art. 17 and your GDPR rights do.

No body on the European Commission's list names Telegram. Some certified bodies list Telegram on their own sites. Use the dispute body finder and ask the body first.

What you stand to lose

Telegram's terms are blunt about money:

Write these down with amounts and dates. If you earn from Telegram, read Telegram business account.

Your data

Under GDPR Art. 15 you can ask for a free copy of your personal data, answered within one month. Use @EURegulation if you can still sign in, or the GDPR form of EDPO, Telegram's representative in Brussels.

Outside the EU, these rights don't apply. A new appeal with new facts is the only route.

What not to do

If you think the ban was a mistake, see banned by mistake on Telegram. More on the Telegram hub.

What you stand to lose

A ban on Telegram takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.

  • Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
  • Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
  • The followers, subscribers or community you built
  • Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
  • Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account

On Telegram specifically

  • Telegram's developer pages say frozen accounts are deleted after a set time, unless an appeal is submitted and accepted.
  • Your Stars. Telegram's Stars terms say that if your account is terminated, your remaining Star balance is forfeit and Telegram does not compensate you.
  • Telegram Premium and Telegram Business. Telegram's terms say a ban can mean you lose their benefits, with no compensation.
  • Channel earnings. Telegram's creator terms say that if you lose access to your account or channel, all pending balances are forfeit.
  • Usernames bought on Fragment. Fragment's terms say it may become impossible to link a collectible username to a restricted or deleted account, though you still own it.

Deadlines that are already running

  • Telegram's app says a frozen account will be deleted unless you appeal through @SpamBot before the date it shows. Telegram's pages name no other time limit.
  • Copy of your data: free, and Telegram must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.

Questions people ask

Are Telegram bans permanent?

Some are. Telegram's spam FAQ says repeat offenders may lose the ability to message strangers for good, and its DSA page says it can suspend functions temporarily or permanently. A permanent decision can still be challenged.

Do I lose my Telegram Stars if I am banned?

Telegram's Stars terms say that if your account is terminated, your remaining Star balance is forfeit and Telegram does not compensate you. Don't buy more Stars while the account is at risk.

What happens to my Fragment username if my account is banned?

Fragment's terms say it may become impossible to link a collectible username to a restricted or deleted account, but you still own it. Ask Fragment about your options.

Can I get my Telegram data after a permanent ban?

If you live in the EU, yes, you can ask. GDPR Art. 15 gives you a free copy of your personal data. Use the GDPR form of EDPO, Telegram's representative, if you can't sign in.
