Telegram account suspended or frozen?
Updated 21 October 2026
If Telegram says "Your account is frozen!", you can still read your chats, but you can't send messages or post. Telegram's help pages say a frozen account is deleted unless you appeal and the appeal is accepted. The app shows the date: appeal through @SpamBot before it. Save your data while you can still open the account.
What a freeze is
Telegram's FAQ says an account restricted because of reports from other users is frozen. The app wording is plain: your account was frozen for breaking Telegram's Terms and Conditions, and you can access it but can't send messages or take actions. Tap the notice to see the details and the appeal.
A freeze is more than a spam limit. A limit only stops you writing to strangers. A freeze stops everything except reading, and it comes with a deadline.
Do this today
- Screenshot the notice with the date it shows. That date is your real deadline.
- Export your data. In Telegram Desktop, open Settings, then Advanced, then Export Telegram data. Telegram doesn't say whether this works on a frozen account, but you can still open it, so try now.
- Appeal through @SpamBot, from the link in the notice. Check the bot's name letter by letter. Fake copies exist.
- Write down what you did in the days before the freeze: groups you joined, links you shared, messages to people you didn't know.
How to write the appeal
Keep it short and factual. Say what the account is used for, that you don't think you broke the rules, and why. If someone else had access, or your account sent messages you didn't write, say so and give the date. If you think one group reported you as a wave, say that too. Ask what rule Telegram says you broke.
Telegram's FAQ says moderators review the case, and if the restriction was a mistake, the account is unfrozen. Its DSA page says critical restrictions need approval from a human moderator.
Your EU rights
If you live in the EU:
- Statement of reasons (DSA Art. 17). A freeze suspends your account, so Telegram must tell you the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge it. If the notice doesn't say this, ask for it through the @EURegulation bot, Telegram's DSA contact point for users.
- Internal complaint (DSA Art. 20). Free, for at least six months, not decided by automated means alone. This clearly applies if the freeze is about what you did in public channels or groups. If it is only about private messages, it may not apply. The @SpamBot appeal is then your route.
- Dispute body (DSA Art. 21). Same scope. No body on the Commission list names Telegram, but some list it on their own sites. Use the dispute body finder and ask first.
- Your data (GDPR Art. 15). A free copy, answered within one month. Use @EURegulation or the GDPR form of EDPO, Telegram's representative in Brussels.
- Court. That right stays open.
The legal routes don't stop the deadline in the app. Appeal there first, then use the rest.
Outside the EU, the appeal in the app is your main route.
While you wait
Don't open a second account to keep talking to people. Don't pay anyone who offers to unfreeze the account. If the appeal fails, read Telegram appeal denied. If you think a hack caused it, see banned by mistake on Telegram. Back to the Telegram hub or the free ban checker.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Telegram takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On Telegram specifically
- Telegram's developer pages say frozen accounts are deleted after a set time, unless an appeal is submitted and accepted.
- Your Stars. Telegram's Stars terms say that if your account is terminated, your remaining Star balance is forfeit and Telegram does not compensate you.
- Telegram Premium and Telegram Business. Telegram's terms say a ban can mean you lose their benefits, with no compensation.
- Channel earnings. Telegram's creator terms say that if you lose access to your account or channel, all pending balances are forfeit.
- Usernames bought on Fragment. Fragment's terms say it may become impossible to link a collectible username to a restricted or deleted account, though you still own it.
Deadlines that are already running
- Telegram's app says a frozen account will be deleted unless you appeal through @SpamBot before the date it shows. Telegram's pages name no other time limit.
- Copy of your data: free, and Telegram must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
