Telegram account limited?

Updated 21 October 2026

Why acting early matters: Telegram's app says a frozen account will be deleted unless you appeal through @SpamBot before the date it shows. Telegram's pages name no other time limit. The longer an account is down, the more followers, customers and conversations move on. See what is at stake

If Telegram says you can only send messages to mutual contacts, your account has a spam limit. You can still message people who saved your number and reply to anyone who writes first. Open @SpamBot to see the details and, if you think it's wrong, appeal there. In the EU, Telegram must also explain the limit.

The messages you may see

Telegram's apps use short wordings:

The first two are the classic spam limit. The last two are about public groups. That difference matters for your rights below.

Why it happens

Telegram's spam FAQ says that when people report your messages and moderators agree, the account becomes limited for a time. Typical triggers:

How long it lasts

Telegram's spam FAQ says a first limit most likely lasts a few days or so. Repeated offences mean longer limits, and if you keep writing unwanted messages to strangers, you may lose that ability for good. It also says it can't lift a limit early on request. Its DSA page adds that some restrictions lift by themselves.

How to appeal through @SpamBot

  1. Search for @SpamBot and check the name carefully. Fake bots with similar names exist.
  2. Start the bot. It tells you whether your account is limited.
  3. If you think the limit is wrong, say so. Be brief: what you use Telegram for, who you wrote to, and why it wasn't spam. If you have a recycled or VoIP number, say that.
  4. Screenshot the bot's answers with the date.

Don't send the same request over and over.

What EU law adds

If you live in the EU, it depends on what was limited:

Outside the EU, @SpamBot is your route.

While you are limited

If the limit turns into a freeze, read Telegram account suspended. If you think it hit you by mistake, see banned by mistake on Telegram. More on the Telegram hub.

What you stand to lose

A ban on Telegram takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.

  • Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
  • Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
  • The followers, subscribers or community you built
  • Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
  • Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account

On Telegram specifically

  • Telegram's developer pages say frozen accounts are deleted after a set time, unless an appeal is submitted and accepted.
  • Your Stars. Telegram's Stars terms say that if your account is terminated, your remaining Star balance is forfeit and Telegram does not compensate you.
  • Telegram Premium and Telegram Business. Telegram's terms say a ban can mean you lose their benefits, with no compensation.
  • Channel earnings. Telegram's creator terms say that if you lose access to your account or channel, all pending balances are forfeit.
  • Usernames bought on Fragment. Fragment's terms say it may become impossible to link a collectible username to a restricted or deleted account, though you still own it.

Deadlines that are already running

  • Telegram's app says a frozen account will be deleted unless you appeal through @SpamBot before the date it shows. Telegram's pages name no other time limit.
  • Copy of your data: free, and Telegram must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.

Questions people ask

Why can I only message mutual contacts on Telegram?

Your account has a spam limit. Telegram's spam FAQ says this happens when moderators confirm reports about your messages. You can still message people who saved your number and reply to anyone who writes to you first.

How do I remove the limit on my Telegram account?

Open a chat with @SpamBot, Telegram's official bot for limited accounts. If you think the limit is wrong, say so there. Telegram's FAQ says it can't lift a limit early just because you ask.

Why was my brand new Telegram account limited?

Telegram's spam FAQ says some numbers trigger an overly harsh response, because of a previous owner's activity or because they are virtual or VoIP numbers. Explain this to @SpamBot.

Does the DSA cover a Telegram spam limit?

Partly. A limit restricts your account, so Telegram must explain it (DSA Art. 17). The free complaint and dispute body rules clearly apply to public groups and channels, but may not apply to a limit on private messages only.
