Telegram account disabled?

If Telegram shows "This phone number is banned" when you sign in, Telegram has banned the account tied to that number. Telegram names no appeal route for this on its own pages. Write down the date, screenshot the message, and if you live in the EU, ask for the reasons and a copy of your data through the routes below. Don't sign up again with another number to get around it.
First rule out other causes
Not every lockout is a ban.
- No code arrives. That is a login problem, not a ban. Telegram's FAQ points to its @smstelegram account on X for help with login.
- Long inactivity. Telegram's privacy policy says inactive accounts are deleted after 18 months by default. If you had not opened Telegram for a long time, the account may have deleted itself.
- A frozen account. If you can still open your chats but can't send, the account is frozen, not banned. Read Telegram account suspended instead, because a freeze has a deadline.
If you see the banned message, read on.
What you lose access to
Without sign in you can't reach your chats, contacts, channels or bots from that account. Telegram's terms also say a ban can cost you more:
- Your remaining Stars are forfeit, with no compensation.
- Telegram Premium and Telegram Business benefits can be lost.
- Pending channel earnings are forfeit if you lose access to the account or channel.
Make a short list now of what was on the account. You may need it later.
Your options
Login help. If you are unsure it is a ban, contact @smstelegram on X as Telegram's FAQ suggests. Never send your code to anyone.
Bots, channels, sticker sets. If Telegram banned a bot or channel you run, its FAQ says to write to [email protected].
Your data (GDPR Art. 15). If you live in the EU, you have a right to a free copy of your personal data, answered within one month. Telegram's GDPR representative is EDPO in Brussels, which has an online request form for Telegram. That form does not need the app, which matters when you can't sign in. Ask for your data and for the reasons for the ban in the same request.
Statement of reasons (DSA Art. 17). A ban is a suspension or termination of your account, so Telegram must tell you the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge it. Telegram's only DSA contact for users is the @EURegulation bot, which needs a working account. If you can't sign in, ask for the reasons in your written GDPR request and keep a copy.
Complaint and dispute body (DSA Art. 20 and 21). If you ran public channels or groups and the ban is about what happened there, these clearly apply: a free internal complaint for at least six months, and a certified dispute body. No body on the Commission list names Telegram, but some list it on their own sites. Use the dispute body finder and ask first. If the ban is about private messages only, these may not apply.
Court. That right stays open.
Outside the EU, you depend on Telegram's own support.
Avoid these traps
- Sellers who promise to "unban" a number for a fee. They can't, and many steal accounts.
- Anyone who asks for your login code or two-step password.
- A new account to get around the ban. Platforms treat that as evading it.

A ban on Telegram takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On Telegram specifically
- Telegram's developer pages say frozen accounts are deleted after a set time, unless an appeal is submitted and accepted.
- Your Stars. Telegram's Stars terms say that if your account is terminated, your remaining Star balance is forfeit and Telegram does not compensate you.
- Telegram Premium and Telegram Business. Telegram's terms say a ban can mean you lose their benefits, with no compensation.
- Channel earnings. Telegram's creator terms say that if you lose access to your account or channel, all pending balances are forfeit.
- Usernames bought on Fragment. Fragment's terms say it may become impossible to link a collectible username to a restricted or deleted account, though you still own it.
Deadlines that are already running
- Telegram's app says a frozen account will be deleted unless you appeal through @SpamBot before the date it shows. Telegram's pages name no other time limit.
- Copy of your data: free, and Telegram must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
