How long does a Telegram ban last?
Updated 21 October 2026
Telegram's spam FAQ says a first spam limit most likely lasts a few days. Repeated limits get longer and can become permanent. A frozen account lasts until the date shown in the app, when it is deleted unless your appeal is accepted. For your EU rights, the clocks are set by law: one month for your data, 90 days for a dispute body.
What Telegram says about its own timing
- Spam limit. A first limit most likely lasts a few days or so. Repeated offences mean longer periods. If you keep writing unwanted messages to strangers, you may lose that ability for good.
- Early release. Telegram's spam FAQ says it can't lift a limit early on request.
- Automatic end. Telegram's DSA page says some restrictions lift by themselves.
- Frozen account. The notice shows a date. Telegram's help pages say the account is deleted unless an appeal is submitted and accepted.
- Reviews. Telegram makes no promise to users about how fast it answers. Its 2024/25 DSA transparency report gives a median of 9 hours for complaints about the parts that may be online platforms. A median is not your case: some take much longer.
There is no published time limit for a @SpamBot appeal. Don't wait for one: appeal as soon as you know.
Legal time limits in the EU
If you live in the EU, these are fixed by law:
- Statement of reasons (DSA Art. 17). Due when Telegram restricts or suspends your account. If you got none, ask through @EURegulation.
- Internal complaint (DSA Art. 20). You can complain for at least six months after the decision. This clearly applies to decisions about public channels and groups. For a limit on private messages only, it may not apply.
- Dispute body (DSA Art. 21). The body decides within 90 days of receiving your complete complaint. Same scope as Art. 20.
- Your data (GDPR Art. 15). One month from your request, up to two more months for complex requests if Telegram tells you why.
The deadline calculator works out these dates from the day you were told.
Which deadline matters most
For a frozen account: the date in the app. It is the one hard date Telegram itself sets, and missing it can mean the account is deleted. Appeal first, then use the legal routes.
For a spam limit: no deadline runs against you. The limit ends by itself or after a successful appeal. Use the time to ask for your data and the reasons if you think the limit was wrong.
For a banned number: no Telegram deadline is published. Act fast anyway. Records get harder to rebuild over time.
A note on inactive accounts
Telegram's privacy policy says inactive accounts are deleted after 18 months by default. If a ban keeps you out for a long time, keep that in mind when you plan.
What to do while you wait
- Write down every date: the notice, your appeal, each answer.
- Don't send many appeals in a row. One clear appeal, then wait.
- Don't use another account to get around the limit. That can make it longer.
For a spam limit, see Telegram account limited. For a freeze, see Telegram account suspended. More on the Telegram hub.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Telegram takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On Telegram specifically
- Telegram's developer pages say frozen accounts are deleted after a set time, unless an appeal is submitted and accepted.
- Your Stars. Telegram's Stars terms say that if your account is terminated, your remaining Star balance is forfeit and Telegram does not compensate you.
- Telegram Premium and Telegram Business. Telegram's terms say a ban can mean you lose their benefits, with no compensation.
- Channel earnings. Telegram's creator terms say that if you lose access to your account or channel, all pending balances are forfeit.
- Usernames bought on Fragment. Fragment's terms say it may become impossible to link a collectible username to a restricted or deleted account, though you still own it.
Deadlines that are already running
- Telegram's app says a frozen account will be deleted unless you appeal through @SpamBot before the date it shows. Telegram's pages name no other time limit.
- Copy of your data: free, and Telegram must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
