Discord account suspended?
Updated 21 October 2026
A Discord suspension is a decision by Discord itself and blocks your whole account for a time. Read the notice, check your account standing if you can reach it, and appeal through Discord's route if you think the decision is wrong. If you live in the EU, you also have a free complaint for at least six months and the right to a clear statement of reasons. If you own servers, make sure someone you trust can manage them meanwhile.
What a suspension is, and is not
A suspension comes from Discord's safety team or automated systems. It usually follows a rule breach, sometimes after earlier warnings. A temporary suspension can last up to one year. A permanent one does not expire.
It is not a server ban. If only one server removed you, that was its moderators' call, and Discord's appeals cover actions Discord took on your account. The Discord overview explains the difference.
Read the notice and your standing
Discord shows warnings and restrictions in an account standing section in your settings. Look for:
- What was decided: a suspension, its length, and what you cannot do.
- Why: which policy, and ideally which message or content.
- How to appeal.
If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act (Art. 17) requires Discord to give the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge the decision. If you only see a general policy name, note it.
If you own or run servers
A suspended owner cannot manage their server. Before or right after the suspension starts, if you can:
- Make sure at least one trusted person has admin permissions.
- Tell your community through another channel what is happening, in calm terms.
- Don't hand over your own account login to a co-admin. Give them roles instead.
For servers that bring in money, see Discord business accounts.
Appealing well
- Save evidence: screenshots of the notice, account standing, and the conversation in question if you can see it.
- Keep it specific. Name the message or content, explain why it did not break the policy, and give the context: a private server among friends, a quote, a reply to harassment, a link you did not send.
- Stay calm. No accusations against the person you think reported you.
- Note the date. Your free internal complaint (DSA Art. 20) stays open for at least six months, and must involve a person, not automated means alone. If it was wrong, Discord must reverse it without undue delay.
If it stays in place
If you live in the EU, you can go to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body (Art. 21), even without finishing the internal appeal. No certified body lists Discord by name yet, but general bodies may take your case. It is free or a nominal fee, the body decides within 90 days of receiving your complaint, and Discord pays your reasonable costs if you win. You can also request your data under GDPR Art. 15 and go to court. Outside the EU, Discord's appeal is the main route.
Don't make it longer
Using an alt account to stay in your servers while suspended can be treated as getting around the action, and it can turn a suspension into something permanent. For timings, read how long Discord actions last.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Discord takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On Discord specifically
- Discord's help pages say permanent suspensions do not expire and the user loses the account.
- Your username. Discord's help pages say it is made available to others once the appeal grace period ends.
- Nitro and other purchases. Discord's paid services terms say that if your account is terminated or suspended, you are not entitled to a refund for the unused part of a subscription or for lost virtual goods.
Deadlines that are already running
- Discord's help pages say a permanently suspended user has a grace period to appeal. After it, the username is made available again. Discord does not say how long the grace period is.
- Complaint to Discord: open for at least six months from the day Discord told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Discord must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
What happens when Discord suspends my account?
You lose access to Discord for the period of the suspension, but you can still log in to see your account standing. It shows your violations and when the suspension ends.
Do my servers get deleted if my Discord account is suspended?
A suspension of your account is not the same as removing your server. If you own a server, give a trusted co-admin enough permissions so the community can keep running. Discord can also act on a server separately.
Does a Discord warning lead to a suspension?
Discord uses warnings and restrictions before suspensions for many violations, and more serious or repeated ones can lead to a suspension. Severe violations can lead straight to stronger action.
Can I appeal a Discord suspension?
Yes. Every violation notice links to a review form, and under User Settings, My Account, Standing you can pick the violation and choose Let us know. If you live in the EU, you also have a free internal complaint for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision.
