Banned on Discord by mistake?
Updated 21 October 2026
If Discord banned you for something you did not do, your appeal should say so plainly and show the evidence. The usual causes are a hacked account sending scam links, a false age report, a wave of reports after a dispute, or being caught up in a server that broke the rules. If you live in the EU, Discord must explain its decision, have a person review your complaint, and reverse a wrong decision without undue delay.
The common mistakes on Discord
- Hacked account. Someone got your login or token, often through a fake game, a "free Nitro" link or a QR code, and sent scam links from your account.
- False age report. Someone reported you as being under Discord's minimum age.
- Report wave. People from a server you argued with reported you all at once.
- Guilt by server. You were a member of a server Discord removed, without taking part in what broke the rules.
- Automated detection. A filter misread an image, file or link.
First check that it really is a Discord action, not a server ban. The Discord overview explains how to tell.
If your account was taken over
Do this before you appeal:
- Change your email password, then your Discord password, from Discord's own site or app.
- Turn on two factor authentication.
- In settings, remove apps you do not recognise under Authorized Apps. Discord says a new password also logs out your other devices.
- Write down the dates: when the strange messages went out, any login alerts, when you noticed.
- Tell your friends not to click the links your account sent.
In the appeal, say the account was compromised, which messages were not yours, and what you have done to secure it.
If the reason is age
If you are old enough, follow the verification route in Discord's message or on its help pages. Only send documents through Discord's official process, never by DM.
How to show it was a mistake
- Be specific: which content or behaviour, and why it was not you or not a breach.
- Give dates: when you joined a server, when you left, when the hack happened.
- Add context: a joke among friends, a quote, a file a bot posted.
- Stay calm and skip accusations against the people who reported you.
If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act (Art. 17) requires a clear statement of reasons, including whether automated tools were used. Ask for one if you only got a general message. Your free internal complaint (Art. 20) stays open for at least six months and must involve a person.
If Discord does not change its mind
You can go to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body (Art. 21). No certified body lists Discord by name yet, but general bodies may still take your case. If you win, Discord pays the fees and your reasonable costs. You can also request your data under GDPR Art. 15 and go to court. See Discord appeal denied. Outside the EU, Discord's appeal is the main route.
Avoid the second trap
After a mistaken ban, scammers often pose as Discord staff or "ban appeal helpers". They want your login, your ID or money. Discord will not contact you by DM to fix a ban. And don't make an alt account while you wait: getting around the action is a real violation, even if the first ban was not.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Discord takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On Discord specifically
- Discord's help pages say permanent suspensions do not expire and the user loses the account.
- Your username. Discord's help pages say it is made available to others once the appeal grace period ends.
- Nitro and other purchases. Discord's paid services terms say that if your account is terminated or suspended, you are not entitled to a refund for the unused part of a subscription or for lost virtual goods.
Deadlines that are already running
- Discord's help pages say a permanently suspended user has a grace period to appeal. After it, the username is made available again. Discord does not say how long the grace period is.
- Complaint to Discord: open for at least six months from the day Discord told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Discord must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
My Discord account sent scam links I didn't write. Why was I banned?
Discord's safety pages warn that fake links, downloads and QR codes are used to take over accounts, which then send scams to friends. Secure your account, then appeal and explain that it was taken over, with the dates it happened.
Someone reported me as underage on Discord. What do I do?
If you are old enough, log in, open the Minimum Age Requirements violation and choose a way to confirm your age, such as a video selfie or ID scan, depending on your region. Never send ID to anyone who contacts you by DM claiming to be Discord staff.
Can I get banned on Discord for something in a server I was just in?
Discord can act on members of servers that break its rules, depending on their own involvement. In your appeal, explain your role: when you joined, whether you posted, and whether you knew what the server was used for.
How do I prove a Discord ban was automated?
If you live in the EU, the statement of reasons must say whether automated tools were used. A request for your data under the GDPR can also show what Discord linked to your account.
