Restricted on Discord?

Updated 21 October 2026

Why acting early matters: Discord's help pages say a permanently suspended user has a grace period to appeal. After it, the username is made available again. Discord does not say how long the grace period is. The longer an account is down, the more followers, customers and conversations move on. See what is at stake

If parts of Discord stopped working for you, check first whether it is one server's settings or a limit Discord placed on your account. Server filters, verification levels and bans come from that server's team. Account limits, such as being unable to send messages or post images anywhere, come from Discord and show in your account standing. If you live in the EU, Discord must explain those limits and let you complain for free.

Server settings or Discord?

Servers can restrict you in many ways:

If the problem is only in one or two servers, it is almost certainly local. Read the server's rules channel or ask a moderator politely.

Discord itself can also place limits on an account, as part of its warning system: for example losing the ability to post images, or a temporary limit on messaging or posting, for a few hours up to a year. These show in your account standing and apply everywhere.

How to check

  1. Open your user settings and look for the account standing section. It lists warnings and active restrictions if Discord has applied any.
  2. Try the same action in a different server or with a friend who accepts your messages.
  3. Check your email for messages from Discord.

If account standing shows a restriction, that is a decision by Discord.

If Discord restricted you

If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act (Art. 17) applies to more than full bans. When a platform restricts an account or limits the visibility of content, it must give a clear and specific statement of reasons: the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge it.

Then:

Outside the EU, Discord's own support and appeal are the main route.

While the limit lasts

When it gets more serious

A restriction can come before a suspension. If one arrives, read Discord account suspended. If you think a hack or false reports caused it, see banned by mistake on Discord.

What you stand to lose

A ban on Discord takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.

  • Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
  • Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
  • The followers, subscribers or community you built
  • Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
  • Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account

On Discord specifically

  • Discord's help pages say permanent suspensions do not expire and the user loses the account.
  • Your username. Discord's help pages say it is made available to others once the appeal grace period ends.
  • Nitro and other purchases. Discord's paid services terms say that if your account is terminated or suspended, you are not entitled to a refund for the unused part of a subscription or for lost virtual goods.

Deadlines that are already running

  • Discord's help pages say a permanently suspended user has a grace period to appeal. After it, the username is made available again. Discord does not say how long the grace period is.
  • Complaint to Discord: open for at least six months from the day Discord told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
  • Copy of your data: free, and Discord must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.

Questions people ask

Why can't I send direct messages on Discord?

The other person may only accept messages from friends or server members, or may have blocked you. If you cannot message anyone, Discord may have limited your account, which you can check in your account standing.

Why can't I join a Discord server?

The server may require a verified email or phone, a minimum account age, or answers to a screening form. You may also be banned from it. If you cannot join any server, check whether Discord has limited your account.

Why are my Discord messages deleted automatically?

Many servers use AutoMod or bots that delete messages with certain words, links or attachments. Discord also filters some content such as known spam links. The server's rules usually explain local filters.

Do EU rules apply to a Discord restriction, not just a ban?

Yes, if Discord itself restricts your account or limits your content and you live in the EU. The DSA requires a statement of reasons for those decisions and gives you a free complaint.
