How long does a Discord ban last?
Updated 21 October 2026
A temporary Discord suspension or restriction lasts as long as the notice and your account standing say, and then ends on its own. Server bans are up to the server's moderators. Discord does not publish fixed appeal times. If you live in the EU, some deadlines are set by law: at least six months to complain, 90 days for a dispute body to decide, and one month for a data request.
Discord actions
Check the notice and your account standing in settings. You will usually see:
- Warnings, which Discord says do not affect your standing.
- Restrictions on certain features, with an end date.
- Temporary suspensions, with an end date, lasting up to one year.
- Permanent actions, with none. See permanently banned on Discord.
A temporary action ends when its period is over. You can still appeal it if you think it was wrong, so that it stops counting against you.
Server actions
Moderators control these:
- Timeouts last a set time chosen by the moderator.
- Bans are in the hands of the server's moderators.
If a server has an appeal process, use it. If not, a single polite message to a moderator is the most you can do.
How long a Discord appeal takes
Discord does not publish a guaranteed response time, and it varies with the type of case. Be careful with anyone quoting a "usual" number of days. What helps:
- One clear appeal, not several.
- Watching the email linked to your account, including spam.
- Keeping a dated copy of what you sent.
If you live in the EU, your complaint must be handled in a timely, diligent and non-arbitrary way, with a person involved. The law does not set a number of days for this step.
Time limits set by law, if you live in the EU
- At least six months from the day you were told about the decision to use Discord's free internal complaint (DSA Art. 20).
- Without undue delay: Discord must reverse a decision your complaint shows was wrong.
- 90 days for a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body to decide, counted from when it receives your complaint (DSA Art. 21). In very complex cases it can take up to 90 days longer. No certified body lists Discord by name yet, but general bodies may take your case.
- One month for Discord to answer a request for your personal data (GDPR Art. 15), or up to two more months for complex requests if it says why.
Turn these into real dates with the deadline calculator.
While you wait
- Save screenshots of the notice and your account standing.
- If you own servers, make sure a trusted co-admin can run them.
- Don't use an alt account to get around the action. It can extend it or make it permanent.
- If you live in the EU and nothing comes back, you do not have to keep waiting before going to a dispute body.
Don't wait if you were hacked
If your account sent spam or scam links you did not write, secure it now: new password, two factor authentication, remove unknown connected apps and sessions. Then read banned by mistake on Discord. For the full picture, see the Discord overview.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Discord takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On Discord specifically
- Discord's help pages say permanent suspensions do not expire and the user loses the account.
- Your username. Discord's help pages say it is made available to others once the appeal grace period ends.
- Nitro and other purchases. Discord's paid services terms say that if your account is terminated or suspended, you are not entitled to a refund for the unused part of a subscription or for lost virtual goods.
Deadlines that are already running
- Discord's help pages say a permanently suspended user has a grace period to appeal. After it, the username is made available again. Discord does not say how long the grace period is.
- Complaint to Discord: open for at least six months from the day Discord told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Discord must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
How long is a Discord suspension?
Discord sets the length per case. The notice and your account standing show when it ends. There is no single length that applies to everyone.
How long does a Discord server ban last?
That is up to the server's moderators, who can lift a ban when they choose. Timeouts are different: moderators pick a set length, from 60 seconds up to one week.
How long does Discord take to answer an appeal?
Discord does not publish a guaranteed response time. If you live in the EU, it must handle your complaint in a timely and diligent way, but the law sets no fixed number of days for that step.
Do Discord warnings expire?
Discord says most violations expire after 90 days and then stop affecting your account standing, while more severe ones stay active longer. Warnings do not affect your standing at all. Check your own account standing to see what is active.
