YouTube channel restricted or demonetised?
Updated 21 October 2026
If your YouTube channel is still up but you lost ads, monetisation, live streaming or reach, it is restricted rather than banned. Open YouTube Studio, find which restriction applies to which video, and request a review for each one you think is wrong. If you live in the EU, limiting visibility and stopping monetisation are both decisions YouTube must explain and that you can challenge for free.
The kinds of YouTube restriction
Restrictions on YouTube are often split across different tools. The common ones are:
- Limited ads on a video. A yellow icon shows the video is not suitable for all advertisers. It earns less or nothing.
- Removed from the YouTube Partner Program. The whole channel stops earning. The email names a policy, often reused content, repetitive content or a Community Guidelines issue.
- Age restriction. Only signed in adults can watch, and the video is not shown in some places.
- Feature limits. Live streaming, custom thumbnails or longer uploads can be switched off.
- Comments disabled on some videos, for example videos featuring children.
None of these is a strike by itself, but some come with one. Check for both.
How to check what happened
- Open YouTube Studio and look at the content list. Icons and labels show limited ads, age restrictions and copyright claims.
- Open the monetisation section to see whether the channel is still in the Partner Program.
- Check your email and Studio notifications for messages about features.
- Screenshot each item with the date.
If your views dropped but nothing is marked, it may not be a restriction at all. Look at your traffic sources in analytics before you assume one.
How to challenge each one
- Limited ads: request a human review from the video's monetisation icon. Explain in the description and title what the video is about, and make sure the first seconds do not suggest something it is not.
- Partner Program removal: read the policy named. If it says reused content, show what you add: commentary, editing, original footage. Use the appeal option in the email or in Studio.
- Age restriction: appeal from Studio and explain why the content suits a general audience.
- Feature limits: check whether they are linked to a strike or to account verification, and follow the route shown.
Keep each request short and specific. One video, one reason.
Protect your income while you wait
- Write down lost earnings per week, using your analytics.
- Tell sponsors early if a video is affected. Many accept a delay better than silence.
- Do not move uploads to a second channel to keep earning. It can be treated as circumvention.

Your rights in the EU
If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act covers more than bans. When YouTube limits the visibility of your content, or suspends or ends monetisation, it must give a statement of reasons: the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge it.
You can complain free through YouTube's internal system for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision. It must not be decided by automated means alone. If you show the decision was wrong, YouTube must reverse it without undue delay.
You can also go to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body. Appeals Centre Europe, User Rights and Platform Control list YouTube. They decide within 90 days of receiving your complaint. The decision is not binding, but YouTube must engage in good faith. Court stays open as a last resort.
Outside the EU, YouTube's own review tools are your main route. If a restriction turned into a strike, see YouTube strike and suspension.

What you stand to lose
A ban on YouTube takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On YouTube specifically
- YouTube's help pages say that after a termination you lose access to your Studio dashboard and other features. You can still sign in to YouTube Studio to see the details of the termination.
- Partner Program money. YouTube's help pages say a terminated channel no longer earns revenue, and YouTube may withhold unpaid earnings.
- Your other channels. YouTube's help pages say that after a termination you may not use, own or create any other YouTube channel.
Deadlines that are already running
- YouTube's help pages say you have up to 1 year from the termination date to appeal, with at most two appeals in that year.
- YouTube's help pages say that once a channel is terminated, you can no longer download your YouTube content. You can still download your Google data.
- Complaint to YouTube: open for at least six months from the day YouTube told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and YouTube must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
What does the yellow dollar icon on YouTube mean?
It means a video has limited or no ads because YouTube thinks it is not suitable for all advertisers. You can usually request a human review from YouTube Studio. It is an ad decision, not a strike.
Why was my channel removed from the YouTube Partner Program?
YouTube can remove channels from the program for breaking monetisation policies, such as reused content or repetitive content, or for Community Guidelines issues. The email should name the policy. In the EU, ending monetisation is a decision YouTube must explain.
Can I appeal an age restriction on YouTube?
Yes. YouTube offers an appeal for age restrictions from YouTube Studio. Explain why the video is suitable for all viewers, or accept the restriction if it fits the content.
Is YouTube shadowbanning my channel?
A drop in views has many causes. Specific limits, such as age restrictions, limited ads or removed features, show up in YouTube Studio. Start with what you can see there.
