YouTube channel permanently terminated?

Updated 21 October 2026

Why acting early matters: YouTube's help pages say you have up to 1 year from the termination date to appeal, with at most two appeals in that year. The longer an account is down, the more followers, customers and conversations move on. See what is at stake

A permanent YouTube termination means the channel stays down unless YouTube itself reverses the decision. It is not beyond review. You can appeal, and if you live in the EU you can complain for free for at least six months, take the case to one of three certified dispute bodies that list YouTube, and ask Google for a copy of your data. Do not create a new channel while you do this.

What "permanent" means for a YouTube channel

YouTube uses words like terminated and permanent to describe the penalty. Legally, in the EU, closing an account is a decision that must be explained and can be challenged, and if a complaint shows it was wrong, YouTube must reverse it without undue delay.

The useful question is not whether the label says permanent. It is whether YouTube got the facts and the rule right. That is what your challenge needs to show.

The three routes to termination

YouTube's help pages describe three main ways a channel gets terminated:

  1. Three strikes within 90 days. Look at each strike. If one was wrong, the termination rests on it.
  2. A single case of severe abuse. One video or action was serious enough on its own. Your challenge focuses on that one item and its context.
  3. A channel dedicated to violations, or linked to a terminated channel. YouTube decided the whole channel is about breaking rules, such as spam or impersonation, or that it belongs to someone already banned. Your challenge shows what the channel really is, or that the link is wrong.

Find your route in the termination email. Each needs different evidence.

Building a case

Be honest about anything that was a fair strike. Reviewers trust a case that admits one mistake and contests the others.

Your rights in the EU

If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act gives you several routes even after a "permanent" label.

Statement of reasons. YouTube must tell you the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge the decision.

Internal complaint. Free, for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision, and not decided by automated means alone.

Out-of-court dispute settlement. Appeals Centre Europe, User Rights and Platform Control are certified bodies that list YouTube. You can go to them without appealing first. They decide within 90 days of receiving your complaint. The decision is not binding, but YouTube must engage in good faith. If you win, YouTube pays the fees and your reasonable costs.

Your data. A GDPR access request gets you a free copy of your personal data. Google must answer within one month, or up to three months for complex requests if it tells you why.

Court. That right stays.

Outside the EU, YouTube's own appeal is the main route. If YouTube has already rejected it, see YouTube appeal denied.

What to avoid

What you stand to lose

A ban on YouTube takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.

  • Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
  • Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
  • The followers, subscribers or community you built
  • Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
  • Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account

On YouTube specifically

  • YouTube's help pages say that after a termination you lose access to your Studio dashboard and other features. You can still sign in to YouTube Studio to see the details of the termination.
  • Partner Program money. YouTube's help pages say a terminated channel no longer earns revenue, and YouTube may withhold unpaid earnings.
  • Your other channels. YouTube's help pages say that after a termination you may not use, own or create any other YouTube channel.

Deadlines that are already running

  • YouTube's help pages say you have up to 1 year from the termination date to appeal, with at most two appeals in that year.
  • YouTube's help pages say that once a channel is terminated, you can no longer download your YouTube content. You can still download your Google data.
  • Complaint to YouTube: open for at least six months from the day YouTube told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
  • Copy of your data: free, and YouTube must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.

Questions people ask

Can a terminated YouTube channel come back?

It can, if YouTube reverses the decision after an appeal or complaint. Termination is YouTube's heaviest penalty, but it is still a decision you are entitled to challenge. Nobody can promise the outcome.

Why was my channel terminated without three strikes?

YouTube says it can terminate a channel after a single case of severe abuse, if the channel is dedicated to breaking the rules, or if it is linked to another terminated channel. The notice should say which applies.

Can I create a new YouTube channel after termination?

YouTube's rules say you may not use, own or create other channels after a termination. A new channel is likely to be removed. YouTube is testing a way for some creators to request a new channel from YouTube Studio one year after termination, but not after copyright terminations.

What happens to my videos when my channel is terminated?

They are no longer public. If you live in the EU, you can ask Google for a copy of your personal data under the GDPR, which can include what you uploaded.
