How long does a YouTube strike or ban last?

Updated 21 October 2026

Why acting early matters: YouTube's help pages say you have up to 1 year from the termination date to appeal, with at most two appeals in that year. The longer an account is down, the more followers, customers and conversations move on. See what is at stake

A YouTube strike stays on your channel for 90 days, with a shorter upload freeze inside that time, and a termination has no end date at all. YouTube does not promise a fixed time for appeals. The deadlines you can rely on come from EU law if you live in the EU: at least six months to complain for free, 90 days for a dispute body after it receives your complaint, and one month for a data request.

How long YouTube penalties last

YouTube's help pages describe these periods:

The 90 day window is the number to watch. If you have one active strike, the next 90 days are when another mistake costs the most.

How long appeals take

YouTube does not publish a guaranteed time for every appeal. Some creators hear back within a short time, others wait longer, and anyone who tells you an exact number is guessing.

A very fast rejection may suggest an automated decision. In the EU, complaints must not be decided by automated means alone, so record the time you sent your appeal and the time of the answer.

Do not send the same appeal many times. It does not speed things up and it makes your file harder to follow.

These apply if you live in the EU.

  1. At least six months to complain. Under the Digital Services Act, you can use YouTube's internal complaint system for free for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision.
  2. 90 days for a dispute body. A certified out-of-court dispute settlement body, such as Appeals Centre Europe, User Rights or Platform Control, decides within 90 days of receiving your complaint, or up to 90 days longer in very complex cases. Send everything with your complaint so they can start right away.
  3. One month for your data. A GDPR access request to Google must be answered within one month. Google can extend that by up to two more months for complex requests if it tells you why.
  4. Without undue delay. If your complaint shows YouTube was wrong, it must reverse the decision without undue delay.

Using the waiting time well

Outside the EU, these legal deadlines do not apply, and YouTube's own appeal is your main route. If you are mid freeze, see YouTube strike and suspension. If YouTube already said no, read YouTube appeal denied.

What you stand to lose

A ban on YouTube takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.

  • Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
  • Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
  • The followers, subscribers or community you built
  • Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
  • Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account

On YouTube specifically

  • YouTube's help pages say that after a termination you lose access to your Studio dashboard and other features. You can still sign in to YouTube Studio to see the details of the termination.
  • Partner Program money. YouTube's help pages say a terminated channel no longer earns revenue, and YouTube may withhold unpaid earnings.
  • Your other channels. YouTube's help pages say that after a termination you may not use, own or create any other YouTube channel.

Deadlines that are already running

  • YouTube's help pages say you have up to 1 year from the termination date to appeal, with at most two appeals in that year.
  • YouTube's help pages say that once a channel is terminated, you can no longer download your YouTube content. You can still download your Google data.
  • Complaint to YouTube: open for at least six months from the day YouTube told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
  • Copy of your data: free, and YouTube must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
