YouTube channel terminated by mistake?
Updated 21 October 2026
If YouTube terminated or struck your channel for something you did not do, show the mistake with evidence rather than just saying it was wrong. Work out what happened (a hijacked channel, false copyright claims, a wrong link to another channel, mass flagging or an automated misread), gather proof for that cause, and send one clear appeal. If you live in the EU, YouTube must say whether automated tools were used, and you can take the decision to an independent dispute body.
Common YouTube mistakes and the proof each needs
A hijacked channel
Someone took over the channel, often through a fake sponsorship email with a malicious file, and used it for scam streams or spam. YouTube then terminated it. Proof:
- Google security alert emails,
- the date and time you lost control,
- the email that tricked you, if there was one,
- evidence the scam videos or streams started after that.
Secure your Google account first: change passwords, check recovery details, remove unknown devices, and turn on two-step verification.
False copyright claims
Someone claimed your original work, or misused the takedown system to hit you with strikes. If you are sure you have the rights or your use is allowed, you can file a counter notification. It is a legal step and shares your contact details with the claimant, so read YouTube's guidance first.
A wrong link to another channel
YouTube terminates channels it believes belong to someone already banned. Shared Wi-Fi, a family computer or a former manager's access can create a false link. Show who you are, how long you have run the channel, and why you are not connected to the other one.
Mass flagging
A group flagged your videos after a dispute. Flags start reviews, but they do not decide the result on their own. Show the call to flag you and show that the videos follow the rules.
An automated misread
A medical, historical or news video read as violent or harmful. Show the context: title, description, narration, sources.
Write the appeal
One cause, one piece of proof, one request. For example:
"My channel was taken over on 12 May after I opened a fake sponsorship file. Google's security alert from that day is attached. The live streams that broke the rules were run by the attacker. I have now secured the account. Please review the termination."
Do not attack YouTube staff, and do not mix every grievance into one message.
Your rights in the EU
If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act helps in mistake cases.
YouTube's statement of reasons must say whether automated tools were used. You can complain free through YouTube's internal system for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision, and the complaint must not be decided by automated means alone. If it shows the decision was wrong, YouTube must reverse it without undue delay.
You can also go to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body. Appeals Centre Europe, User Rights and Platform Control list YouTube. They decide within 90 days of receiving your complaint. The decision is not binding, but YouTube must engage in good faith. Court remains open.
You can also request a free copy of your data under the GDPR. It may show security events from the time of a hijack.
Outside the EU, YouTube's appeal is your main route.
Watch out for scams
After a hijack, fake "YouTube support" accounts often contact victims. YouTube will not ask for your password in a direct message. Never pay for recovery.
If you are fully locked out, read YouTube channel terminated or disabled. If the appeal was already rejected, see YouTube appeal denied.
Back to the YouTube hub, or run the free ban checker.
What you stand to lose
A ban on YouTube takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On YouTube specifically
- YouTube's help pages say that after a termination you lose access to your Studio dashboard and other features. You can still sign in to YouTube Studio to see the details of the termination.
- Partner Program money. YouTube's help pages say a terminated channel no longer earns revenue, and YouTube may withhold unpaid earnings.
- Your other channels. YouTube's help pages say that after a termination you may not use, own or create any other YouTube channel.
Deadlines that are already running
- YouTube's help pages say you have up to 1 year from the termination date to appeal, with at most two appeals in that year.
- YouTube's help pages say that once a channel is terminated, you can no longer download your YouTube content. You can still download your Google data.
- Complaint to YouTube: open for at least six months from the day YouTube told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and YouTube must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
My YouTube channel was hacked and then terminated. What do I do?
Secure your Google account first, then appeal and explain that someone else had control. Show security alerts, the date you lost access, and that the violating videos or streams started after that.
What if someone filed a false copyright claim against me?
You can file a counter notification if you are sure you have the rights or the use is allowed. It is a legal step and shares your contact details with the claimant, so read YouTube's guidance before you send it.
Why was my channel terminated for being linked to another channel?
YouTube terminates channels it believes belong to someone who is already banned. If the link is wrong, for example a shared household or work network, explain that and show your channel's own history.
Can automated systems terminate a YouTube channel?
Automated systems flag a lot of content on YouTube. In the EU, YouTube must tell you whether automated tools were used, and your complaint must not be decided by automated means alone.
