YouTube channel terminated or disabled?

Updated 21 October 2026

Why acting early matters: YouTube's help pages say you have up to 1 year from the termination date to appeal, with at most two appeals in that year. The longer an account is down, the more followers, customers and conversations move on. See what is at stake

If you cannot reach your YouTube channel, first find out whether YouTube terminated the channel or Google disabled your whole Google account. They have different appeal routes. For a terminated channel, sign in to YouTube Studio and use the appeal option there. For a disabled Google account, use the option on the sign in screen. If you live in the EU, you also have a free complaint right and independent dispute bodies.

Channel terminated or account disabled?

Check two things: your inbox and the sign in screen.

Both feel the same at first, but the second is wider and is reviewed by Google, not only YouTube. Screenshot whatever you see before you click anything.

Appealing a terminated channel

YouTube's help pages say you have up to one year from the termination to appeal, and you can send two appeals in that time. Prepare well before you send the first one.

  1. Find the reason. Is it Community Guidelines strikes, a single severe violation, spam or deceptive practices, copyright, or a link to another terminated channel?
  2. Write what you want reviewed. The specific video or pattern YouTube named, and why it does not break that rule.
  3. Add context. Education, news, documentary, commentary or art can matter under YouTube's policies.
  4. Be calm and short. A reviewer decides faster when the point is clear.
  5. Record the date you sent it.

If the termination came from copyright strikes, the route is different: counter notifications or retractions for each strike.

Appealing a disabled Google account

Use the review request on the Google sign in screen. Explain what you use the account for and why you think the decision is wrong. If you believe someone else used your account, say so and give dates. Never send your password to anyone who contacts you offering help.

Save your videos and data

If your Google account still works, use Google's data export tool for your other Google data now. YouTube's help pages say a terminated channel's YouTube content can no longer be downloaded. If you cannot sign in, you can send a GDPR access request asking for a copy of your personal data. Google must answer within one month, or up to three months for complex requests if it tells you why.

Your rights in the EU

If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act covers channel terminations.

YouTube must give a statement of reasons with the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge it. A vague email with only a policy name may fall short of that, and you can say so in your complaint.

You can complain through YouTube's internal system for free for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision. It must not be decided by automated means alone.

You can take the decision to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body, even without appealing first. Appeals Centre Europe, User Rights and Platform Control list YouTube. They decide within 90 days of receiving your complaint. The decision is not binding, but YouTube must engage in good faith. Your right to go to court remains.

Outside the EU, YouTube's own appeal is your main route.

What not to do

If YouTube already rejected your appeal, read YouTube appeal denied. If you think your channel was hijacked, see YouTube banned by mistake.

What you stand to lose

A ban on YouTube takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.

  • Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
  • Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
  • The followers, subscribers or community you built
  • Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
  • Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account

On YouTube specifically

  • YouTube's help pages say that after a termination you lose access to your Studio dashboard and other features. You can still sign in to YouTube Studio to see the details of the termination.
  • Partner Program money. YouTube's help pages say a terminated channel no longer earns revenue, and YouTube may withhold unpaid earnings.
  • Your other channels. YouTube's help pages say that after a termination you may not use, own or create any other YouTube channel.

Deadlines that are already running

  • YouTube's help pages say you have up to 1 year from the termination date to appeal, with at most two appeals in that year.
  • YouTube's help pages say that once a channel is terminated, you can no longer download your YouTube content. You can still download your Google data.
  • Complaint to YouTube: open for at least six months from the day YouTube told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
  • Copy of your data: free, and YouTube must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a terminated channel and a disabled Google account?

A terminated channel loses YouTube only. A disabled Google account loses all Google services linked to it, including Gmail and Drive. The email or sign in screen tells you which one happened.

Where do I appeal a YouTube channel termination?

YouTube's help pages say you sign in to YouTube Studio with the terminated channel and start the appeal there. If that does not work, YouTube offers a contact form. Fill it in carefully, because the number of appeals is limited.

Can I still download my videos after termination?

YouTube's help pages say that after a termination you can no longer download your YouTube content, though you can still export other Google data. If you live in the EU, you can ask Google for a copy of your personal data under the GDPR.

Will a new channel help while I appeal?

No. YouTube's rules say terminated creators may not create or use other channels. A new channel can be removed and can hurt your appeal.
