Temporarily banned on WhatsApp?

Updated 21 October 2026

Why acting early matters: Ask WhatsApp for a review soon and keep the notice. For a ban over private messages, the EU six-month complaint window may not apply. The longer an account is down, the more followers, customers and conversations move on. See what is at stake

"Temporarily banned" on WhatsApp is a timed lock, not the end of your account. WhatsApp's help pages link it to unofficial apps and to collecting data from WhatsApp. Stop using any modified WhatsApp app, wait until the lock ends, then move to the official app from your phone's app store. If you do nothing, the next step can be a full ban.

Why WhatsApp locks accounts for a while

WhatsApp's Messaging Guidelines list temporary and permanent suspension as actions it can take. A temporary ban is the softer one. It is most often triggered by:

If you never used any of these, your case may be a mistake. Our page on WhatsApp banned by mistake covers recycled numbers and hacked accounts.

What to do during the lock

  1. Screenshot the message with the date and the timer if one is shown.
  2. Save your chats. If your unofficial app has an export or backup option, use it now. WhatsApp says it can't guarantee that a backup from an unofficial app will transfer.
  3. Uninstall the unofficial app when the lock ends, or earlier if the app tells you to.
  4. Install WhatsApp from the official app store for your phone and register your number again.
  5. Stop any automation linked to the number, including bots and bulk senders.

Don't try to get around the lock with another number or another unofficial app. That points the review in exactly the wrong direction.

If the lock turns into a ban

If WhatsApp later shows "This phone number can't use WhatsApp", the lock has become a ban. Then tap Request review in the app soon. WhatsApp's help pages say that without that option, the ban is final. The steps are on WhatsApp disabled.

Your rights if you live in the EU

For a lock over how you used private messaging, the EU route is narrow. The European Commission designated WhatsApp a very large online platform because of Channels, and says private messaging is excluded from the online platform rules. So a DSA complaint and a dispute body probably don't apply, and the DSA statement of reasons is uncertain.

Two things still help:

Your right to go to court stays. If you live outside the EU, WhatsApp's own process is your main route.

Scams to avoid

People who sell "anti-ban" versions of WhatsApp are selling the problem, not the fix. Never pay anyone to lift a lock. And never share the six digit code WhatsApp sends you by text: that is how accounts are stolen.

What you stand to lose

A ban on WhatsApp takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.

  • Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
  • Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
  • The followers, subscribers or community you built
  • Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
  • Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account

On WhatsApp specifically

  • WhatsApp's help pages say you can't access your chat history or backups while your account is banned. You can only get to a backup after the phone number tied to it is unbanned.
  • Your Meta Verified subscription. WhatsApp's help pages say a banned business account automatically loses it, and for some violations the subscription is cancelled without a refund.
  • Your business profile. WhatsApp's Business App Terms say that on termination WhatsApp removes your account profile and keeps the account data for up to 90 days.

Deadlines that are already running

  • Copy of your data: free, and WhatsApp must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.

Questions people ask

Why does WhatsApp say I am temporarily banned?

WhatsApp's help pages link the "Temporarily banned" message to unofficial apps that copy or change WhatsApp, and to collecting data from WhatsApp. Modified versions of the app are the usual reason. The fix is to move back to the official app.

Will a temporary WhatsApp ban become permanent?

It can. WhatsApp's Messaging Guidelines list both temporary and permanent suspension. If you keep using an unofficial app after a temporary ban, you risk a full ban. Move to the official app before the ban ends.

Will I lose my chats if I switch back to official WhatsApp?

That depends on the unofficial app and whether its backup can be read by the official app. WhatsApp can't promise that chats from an unofficial app carry over. Export the chats you care about before you switch, if the app lets you.
