How long does a WhatsApp ban last?
Updated 21 October 2026
WhatsApp's ban notice says most reviews are completed within 24 hours. That is WhatsApp's own figure, and some take longer. There is no published deadline for requesting a review, so do it soon. A restriction ends automatically, without a fixed length published. In the EU, a GDPR request must be answered within one month.
The WhatsApp timeline
Here is what WhatsApp itself publishes, and nothing more:
- Review of a ban. The notice says "Most reviews are completed within 24 hours." WhatsApp says it sends you a notification once it has decided.
- Deadline to ask for a review. None published. WhatsApp's help pages say that if no review option is shown, the ban is final.
- Restriction. Ends automatically. No fixed length is published.
- Temporary ban. WhatsApp's help pages don't give a length.
- Account report. WhatsApp's help pages say a requested account information report is ready in about three days, and you only have a limited time to download it.
WhatsApp says that writing to it outside the review won't speed things up. One review covers one phone number.
Legal time limits if you live in the EU
WhatsApp is a special case. The European Commission designated it a very large online platform because of WhatsApp Channels, and says private messaging is excluded from the online platform rules. That changes which clocks apply.
Always:
- GDPR Art. 15. WhatsApp Ireland Limited must answer a data request within one month. It can take up to two more months for complex requests, but it must tell you why.
- Court. Always open, but national time limits for claims exist. Ask a lawyer in your country if you plan to sue.
Only for decisions about Channels:
- DSA Art. 20. A free internal complaint for at least six months after the decision.
- DSA Art. 21. A certified dispute body decides within 90 days of receiving your complete complaint.
For a ban over private messages, those two probably don't apply. The deadline calculator works out the GDPR date from the day you send your request.
WhatsApp Business: notice periods
For the WhatsApp Business app, WhatsApp's Business App Terms say that business users in the EU within the Platform Regulation get 30 days' notice and reasons before WhatsApp ends the service. There are exceptions, for example repeated breaches. The same terms say that on termination WhatsApp removes your profile and keeps account data for up to 90 days. More on WhatsApp business account.
How to use the waiting time
- Screenshot every notice with the date.
- Request the review if you haven't yet.
- Tell important contacts another way how to reach you.
- Send your GDPR request in writing and note the date.
- Don't create a new account to get around the ban.
A word on scams
The longer you wait, the more tempting "fast unban" offers look. They are scams. Nobody can speed up WhatsApp's review, and nobody needs the six digit code WhatsApp sends you by text except you.
If the wait ends with a rejection, read WhatsApp appeal denied. For all other cases, see the WhatsApp hub.

What you stand to lose
A ban on WhatsApp takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On WhatsApp specifically
- WhatsApp's help pages say you can't access your chat history or backups while your account is banned. You can only get to a backup after the phone number tied to it is unbanned.
- Your Meta Verified subscription. WhatsApp's help pages say a banned business account automatically loses it, and for some violations the subscription is cancelled without a refund.
- Your business profile. WhatsApp's Business App Terms say that on termination WhatsApp removes your account profile and keeps the account data for up to 90 days.
Deadlines that are already running
- Copy of your data: free, and WhatsApp must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
How long do I have to request a WhatsApp review?
WhatsApp doesn't publish a deadline. Its help pages only say the ban is final if no review option is shown. Request the review soon, while the option is there.
My WhatsApp review has taken longer than 24 hours. Is that bad?
Not necessarily. The ban notice says most reviews finish within 24 hours, which means some take longer. WhatsApp says contacting it outside the review won't speed it up. Wait for the notification in the app.
How long does a WhatsApp restriction last?
WhatsApp's help pages say a restriction ends automatically. They don't give a fixed length. To see the time left, tap New Chat and pick a contact you have never chatted with. Avoid new outreach until then.
How long does WhatsApp keep my data after a ban?
WhatsApp's privacy policy says that when it disables an account for breaking its terms, it keeps information about that user for safety, security and integrity purposes. It doesn't give a fixed period there. A GDPR request shows what it holds.
