WhatsApp account restricted?
Updated 21 October 2026
"Your account is restricted right now" means WhatsApp has limited what you can do for a while. WhatsApp's help pages say you can't start chats or calls with new contacts, create new groups, add new members to groups or use linked devices. The restriction ends on its own. Use the time to stop whatever triggered it, because WhatsApp says spam, automated or bulk messaging can lead to a ban.
What a restriction looks like
There are two stages:
- "Your account may be restricted soon." A warning. Nothing is blocked yet.
- "Your account is restricted right now." The limits are on.
While restricted, the features WhatsApp names are blocked. WhatsApp says you can keep talking to contacts and groups you have chatted or called with before. You may also be logged out of some linked devices.
The hardest part is often linked devices. If you use WhatsApp on a computer for work, that link stops during the restriction. Plan around it.
Why it happens
WhatsApp watches for patterns that look like spam. Common ones:
- Messaging many people who don't have your number saved.
- Sending the same message to lots of chats in a short time.
- Adding people to groups they didn't ask to join.
- Using tools or unofficial apps that send messages automatically.
You may have done nothing wrong. A small business that starts using WhatsApp for customers, or a club organiser who invites a whole team, can look similar to a spammer for an automated system.
What to do now
- Screenshot the notice, with the date.
- Stop new outreach. No new chats with unknown numbers, no new groups, no mass forwards.
- Ask people to save your number and write to you first, if you need to reach them.
- Remove automation. Uninstall unofficial apps and switch off any bulk sending tool.
- Wait it out. WhatsApp says the restriction ends automatically.
If you need to message many customers, look at WhatsApp's own business tools instead of a personal account. See WhatsApp business account.
Your rights if you live in the EU
The DSA online platform rules cover WhatsApp Channels. The European Commission says WhatsApp's private messaging is excluded. So for a restriction on your chats, a DSA complaint and a dispute body probably aren't available, and it is uncertain whether WhatsApp must send a statement of reasons.
You can still write to WhatsApp Ireland Limited through its EU contact form, which covers WhatsApp and WhatsApp Channels requests, and ask why you were restricted. Under the GDPR (Art. 15) you can ask for a free copy of your data and whether an automated decision was made about you. WhatsApp must answer within one month, or up to two more months for complex requests if it tells you why. Court stays open.
Outside the EU, waiting and changing how you message is your main route.
Don't make it worse
- Don't switch to a second number to keep messaging the same people. That can look like evading the limit.
- Don't buy "unrestrict" services. They can't do anything WhatsApp's timer doesn't.
- Never share the six digit code WhatsApp sends you by text.
If the restriction turns into a ban, go to WhatsApp disabled. All WhatsApp problems are on the WhatsApp hub.
The free checker tells you which steps apply to you.
What you stand to lose
A ban on WhatsApp takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On WhatsApp specifically
- WhatsApp's help pages say you can't access your chat history or backups while your account is banned. You can only get to a backup after the phone number tied to it is unbanned.
- Your Meta Verified subscription. WhatsApp's help pages say a banned business account automatically loses it, and for some violations the subscription is cancelled without a refund.
- Your business profile. WhatsApp's Business App Terms say that on termination WhatsApp removes your account profile and keeps the account data for up to 90 days.
Deadlines that are already running
- Copy of your data: free, and WhatsApp must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
Can I still message my contacts while WhatsApp restricts me?
WhatsApp's help pages say a restriction stops you starting chats or calls with new contacts. WhatsApp also says you can keep talking to contacts and groups you have chatted or called with before. Use the time to slow down.
How do I remove a WhatsApp restriction?
You can't remove it early. WhatsApp's help pages say it ends automatically. What you can do is stop the behaviour behind it, such as messaging many new people at once.
What does "Your account may be restricted soon" mean?
It is a warning. WhatsApp has seen activity it doesn't like, often messages to many people who don't know you. If you change course now, you may avoid the restriction and a later ban.
Can I appeal a WhatsApp restriction?
WhatsApp's help pages describe the restriction as ending on its own and don't describe an appeal for it. If you think it is a mistake, you can write to WhatsApp through its EU contact form if you live in the EU. Keep screenshots either way.
