Permanently banned from WhatsApp?

Updated 21 October 2026

Why acting early matters: Ask WhatsApp for a review soon and keep the notice. For a ban over private messages, the EU six-month complaint window may not apply. The longer an account is down, the more followers, customers and conversations move on. See what is at stake

On WhatsApp, a ban is final in the app when no review option is shown or the review has failed. WhatsApp's help pages say so plainly. "Final" there means WhatsApp won't look again through the app. It doesn't take away your legal rights. If you live in the EU, you can still ask for your data, hold WhatsApp to its own terms and go to court.

What "final" means on WhatsApp

Unlike many platforms, WhatsApp doesn't usually send a long notice. You see that the number can't use WhatsApp. Then one of two things:

WhatsApp's help pages say you can't open your chat history or backups while banned, and that a backup becomes available only once the number is unbanned. So a final ban can also mean losing years of photos and voice notes. The people you wrote to usually still have those chats on their phones. Ask them for the ones that matter.

Permanent in the app is not the same as permanent in law

WhatsApp's terms for the European Region contain a rule that matters here. They say ending the service for a breach is only allowed after a chance to fix it has run out, or after a warning that didn't work. There are exceptions: if you seriously and finally refused to comply, or special circumstances justify ending it at once. The same section also lets WhatsApp suspend or end your access at any time if it reasonably believes you broke its terms, so this is an argument, not a guarantee.

So if WhatsApp banned you for good with no warning, ask it in writing which special circumstances it relies on. The same terms give [email protected] for people who think a ban was an error.

What you can still do if you live in the EU

  1. GDPR Art. 15. Ask WhatsApp Ireland Limited for a free copy of your data, and ask whether the ban was decided by automated means only (GDPR Art. 22). WhatsApp says its systems automate some decisions. It must answer within one month, or up to two more months for complex requests if it tells you why.
  2. Statement of reasons. You can ask for one under DSA Art. 17. For a ban over private messages it is uncertain whether WhatsApp has to give it, because the European Commission says private messaging is excluded from the online platform rules.
  3. Dispute body. Only clearly available if the decision was about WhatsApp Channels, for example a channel admin ban. Check the dispute body finder.
  4. Court. Always stays open.

If you live outside the EU, the in-app review is your main route, and a final ban is hard to change.

Was it really you?

Sometimes the ban is about the number, not the person. WhatsApp's help pages say that with a new number, the previous owner may have caused the ban. If that fits, read WhatsApp banned by mistake.

Avoid these traps

What you stand to lose

A ban on WhatsApp takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.

  • Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
  • Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
  • The followers, subscribers or community you built
  • Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
  • Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account

On WhatsApp specifically

  • WhatsApp's help pages say you can't access your chat history or backups while your account is banned. You can only get to a backup after the phone number tied to it is unbanned.
  • Your Meta Verified subscription. WhatsApp's help pages say a banned business account automatically loses it, and for some violations the subscription is cancelled without a refund.
  • Your business profile. WhatsApp's Business App Terms say that on termination WhatsApp removes your account profile and keeps the account data for up to 90 days.

Deadlines that are already running

  • Copy of your data: free, and WhatsApp must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.

Questions people ask

Is a WhatsApp ban without a review option really permanent?

Inside the app, yes. WhatsApp's help pages say that without the option to request a review, the ban is final and can't be appealed. Outside the app, if you live in the EU, you can still ask for your data, rely on WhatsApp's terms and go to court.

Can I use WhatsApp with a new number after a permanent ban?

WhatsApp is likely to see that as getting around the ban, and the new number can be banned too. If you need WhatsApp for work or family, try the routes on this page first.

Will my contacts see that I was banned?

WhatsApp doesn't publish what your contacts see. Messages they sent you while you were banned may not reach you. Tell the people who matter another way how to reach you.

Does WhatsApp delete my data after a permanent ban?

Not straight away. WhatsApp's privacy policy says it keeps information about users it disabled for breaking its terms, for safety, security and integrity purposes. A GDPR request shows what it holds.
