TikTok account restricted?
Updated 21 October 2026
If you can still log in to TikTok but cannot post, comment, message or go LIVE, or your videos stopped reaching people, your account is probably restricted. Check the Account check page in the app and your inbox notices to find out which feature is limited and why, then appeal from there. If you live in the EU, a visibility limit counts as a decision TikTok must explain and that you can challenge for free.
The kinds of TikTok restriction
TikTok can switch off parts of your account without banning it. The common ones are:
- Posting blocked for a period after a violation.
- Comments or direct messages blocked, often after reports of harassment or spam.
- LIVE access removed, either for a time or until you meet the requirements again.
- Videos marked as not eligible for the For You feed. They stay on your profile but are not recommended to new viewers.
- Monetisation features paused, such as gifts or creator rewards.
The last two are what people call a shadowban. Reach on TikTok goes up and down for many reasons, so a drop in views alone does not prove a restriction. A notice or a label on a video does.
How to find the restriction
- Open your inbox and look for system notifications about removed videos or limits.
- Open Account check, under Settings and privacy, Support, Safety Center. TikTok's help pages say it shows whether posting, commenting, messaging and other features are restricted.
- Open the analytics of your recent videos and look for a notice that a post is not eligible for the For You feed.
- Screenshot whatever you find, with the date.
If you see nothing at all, but a feature is clearly gone, write that down too. A missing explanation is useful later.
How to challenge it
Most restriction notices have an appeal option. Use it, and keep it specific. Name the video or feature, say what rule TikTok cited, and explain in two to four sentences why it does not fit. For example: "This video shows a cooking knife in a recipe. It is not a weapons video."
Avoid deleting the flagged videos before you appeal. You may need them as evidence, and deleting them can make it harder to show the decision was wrong.
What helps while you are restricted
- Post content that is clearly within the rules, and do not repost what was flagged.
- Do not buy followers or views. Fake engagement is a common reason for limits.
- Do not switch to a second account to get around a block. That can be treated as ban evasion.
- If the restriction costs you income, start a simple loss log now.
Your rights in the EU
Many people do not know that the Digital Services Act covers restrictions, not only bans. If TikTok limits the visibility of your content, or suspends or ends monetisation, it must give you a statement of reasons with the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge it.
You can complain through TikTok's internal system for free for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision. It must not be decided by automated means alone. If your complaint shows the limit was wrong, TikTok must reverse it without undue delay.
You can also take the decision to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body. Appeals Centre Europe and User Rights both list TikTok. They decide within 90 days of receiving your complaint. The decision is not binding, but TikTok must engage in good faith. You keep the right to go to court.
These rights apply if you live in the EU. Elsewhere, the in-app appeal is your main option. If the restriction turned into a full block, see TikTok account suspended.

What you stand to lose
A ban on TikTok takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On TikTok specifically
- TikTok's help pages say it deletes the personal data of a banned account after a period of time, in line with the law and its data retention policy. After that, the account is no longer available.
- Unused Coins and other virtual items. TikTok's EEA virtual items policy says there is no refund if your account is terminated before you use them, unless the law requires one.
- Creator rewards. TikTok's EEA rewards policy says it may end your access to Rewards, including rewards you have already received, after a serious or repeated breach.
Deadlines that are already running
- TikTok's help pages say you can still log in to a banned account to submit an appeal and download your personal data.
- Complaint to TikTok: open for at least six months from the day TikTok told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and TikTok must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
How do I know if TikTok has restricted my account?
Check the Account check page in the app and the notices in your inbox. TikTok may also mark single videos as not eligible for the For You feed. A sudden drop in views alone is not proof, because reach changes for many reasons.
Is a TikTok shadowban real?
TikTok does limit how widely some content is shown, and it calls some videos ineligible for the For You feed. In the EU, limiting the visibility of your content is a decision TikTok must explain with a statement of reasons.
Why can't I go LIVE on TikTok anymore?
LIVE has its own age and eligibility rules, and TikTok can remove LIVE access after a violation. Check your notices and Account check. If you were never told why, you can ask for the reason and appeal.
Can I appeal a restriction or only a ban?
You can challenge restrictions too. If you live in the EU, the free internal complaint and the dispute bodies cover visibility limits and feature limits, not only bans.
