Snapchat features restricted?

Updated 21 October 2026

Why acting early matters: Your EU complaint window is at least six months from the day Snapchat told you about the decision. The longer an account is down, the more followers, customers and conversations move on. See what is at stake

If you can still use Snapchat but certain features are blocked, such as adding friends, posting to Spotlight or your public story, or your views have collapsed, you are probably facing a feature limit, not a ban. Look for a notice in the app, slow down, and fix anything that looks like spam. If you live in the EU and Snapchat limited your content or features on purpose, it must tell you why and you can challenge it.

The limits people run into most

Some of these are rate limits that end by themselves. Others are decisions about your content.

What to change now

  1. Stop mass adding. Add people you know. Remove any app or service that adds friends for you.
  2. Remove unofficial tools. Modified apps, auto-senders and "streak savers" can trigger limits and later a lock.
  3. Check removed content. If Snapchat removed a snap or story, read which guideline it named before posting anything similar.
  4. Vary what you send. The same message or link sent to many friends can look like spam.

Is it a decision or just a dip?

Ask yourself:

If yes, it is likely a decision you can respond to. If your Spotlight views simply fell, there may be nothing formal to challenge yet. Keep a short log of dates and views, so you have evidence if things get worse.

When you think the limit is wrong

Use the appeal option in the notice if there is one, or contact Snapchat Support. Say what you posted or did, and why it fits the rules. Specifics help: "This was a cooking video. It was removed for violence. There is no violence in it."

Your EU rights for limits

The Digital Services Act covers more than bans. If Snapchat removes your content or limits its visibility, it must give you a clear and specific statement of reasons, including whether automated tools were used. If you live in the EU, you can complain through Snapchat's internal complaint system for free, for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision. You can also go to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body; User Rights and Platform Control list Snapchat. The body decides within 90 days of receiving your complaint.

Outside the EU, Snapchat's own appeal options are your main route.

If it gets worse

If the limits turn into a lock, read Snapchat account temporarily locked. If you earn money from public content, see Snapchat business and creator accounts.

What you stand to lose

A ban on Snapchat takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.

  • Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
  • Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
  • The followers, subscribers or community you built
  • Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
  • Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account

On Snapchat specifically

  • Snapchat's help pages say you can't reopen an account locked for breaking its rules yourself. Snapchat may also have removed content or banned your device.
  • Your one appeal. Snapchat's help pages say you can appeal a lock only once. If the appeal is denied, you can't send another.
  • Your Memories. Snapchat points locked users to its data download for Memories and other data.

Deadlines that are already running

  • Snapchat's help pages say you can request your Memories and other data at accounts.snapchat.com under My Data. Data may not be available for some types of locked accounts.
  • Complaint to Snapchat: open for at least six months from the day Snapchat told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
  • Copy of your data: free, and Snapchat must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.

Questions people ask

Why can't I add friends on Snapchat?

Sending lots of friend requests in a short time looks like spam to Snapchat. Its help pages name this as a reason it can lock an account. Slowing down and adding people you actually know is the usual fix.

Why did my Spotlight views drop?

Spotlight reach changes for many reasons, including topic, timing and the content itself. A snap can also be removed or limited if Snapchat says it breaks its guidelines for recommended content. If you live in the EU and Snapchat limited your content on purpose, it must explain why.

Can I appeal a removed Snapchat story or Spotlight snap?

Snapchat tells you about removals and, where an appeal is possible, how to submit it. In the EU, check Settings, then Account Status, for enforcements marked 'Tap to Appeal'. If you live in the EU, you can also use Snapchat's internal complaint system for at least six months and a certified dispute body.
