Snapchat account disabled?
Updated 21 October 2026
If your Snapchat account is disabled or locked and you cannot log in, first read the exact message on the login screen. A temporary lock usually ends once you wait or fix what caused it. A permanent lock can only be appealed in the app, if Snapchat offers you the option. If you live in the EU, Snapchat must explain its decision and you can challenge it for free.
Temporary or permanent?
The wording matters:
- "Temporarily locked" or a message asking you to try again later usually means a waiting period. Often it is linked to an unofficial app or plugin, or to unusual activity such as many friend requests.
- "Permanently locked" or a message saying the account broke the Community Guidelines means Snapchat made a rules decision.
- "Your account has been compromised" or an unexpected password or email change points to a hack. See banned by mistake.
If you are not sure which one you have, screenshot the message and check your email for anything from Snapchat. Be careful with links: only use ones you can confirm are from Snapchat.
Steps for a temporary lock
- Remove unofficial apps. Delete any modified Snapchat app, tweak or third-party plugin. Install the official app from your phone's app store.
- Wait. Trying to log in again and again can keep the lock going. Give it time before your next try.
- Use the official route. When you try again, use the official app or Snapchat's accounts website, and follow any steps it shows.
- Secure your email and phone number. They are how you recover the account.
Steps for a permanent lock
- Screenshot the message, with date and time.
- Open the app, try to log in and tap 'Appeal Decision' if the pop-up offers it. Snapchat says this is the only official way to appeal a lock, and support tickets do not speed it up.
- Keep it short and factual. Name your username, the email or phone on the account, and what you think happened.
- Save the confirmation. Snapchat sends the result by email or in the app.
What about my streaks, Snap Map and Memories?
While locked, you cannot see streaks, your Snap Map or Memories. Friends cannot see you on Snap Map either. Streaks generally depend on daily activity, so a lock is likely to break them, and Snapchat decides whether to restore any. Memories are a different matter: they are your data. If you live in the EU, you can request a copy under GDPR Article 15, free of charge.
Your EU rights
If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act requires Snapchat to give you a clear and specific statement of reasons when it locks or closes your account. You can then:
- complain through Snapchat's internal complaint system for free, for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision
- go to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body; User Rights and Platform Control list Snapchat
- go to court
Outside the EU, Snapchat Support is your main route.
Avoid these mistakes
Do not make a new account to get around the lock. Do not hand your login to anyone promising to restore the account, and never pay for "recovery". These are scams.

What you stand to lose
A ban on Snapchat takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On Snapchat specifically
- Snapchat's help pages say you can't reopen an account locked for breaking its rules yourself. Snapchat may also have removed content or banned your device.
- Your one appeal. Snapchat's help pages say you can appeal a lock only once. If the appeal is denied, you can't send another.
- Your Memories. Snapchat points locked users to its data download for Memories and other data.
Deadlines that are already running
- Snapchat's help pages say you can request your Memories and other data at accounts.snapchat.com under My Data. Data may not be available for some types of locked accounts.
- Complaint to Snapchat: open for at least six months from the day Snapchat told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Snapchat must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
Why does Snapchat say my account is locked?
Snapchat locks accounts for reasons such as using unofficial apps or plugins, suspicious login activity, spam, or breaking its Community Guidelines. The login message and any email from Snapchat should say whether the lock is temporary or permanent.
Can I get my Snapchat Memories back if my account is locked?
You cannot open them in the app while locked. If you live in the EU, you can ask Snapchat for a copy of your personal data under the GDPR, free of charge, and Snapchat must answer within one month or up to three months for complex requests. Snapchat's own data download under My Data at accounts.snapchat.com may also still work, though Snapchat says data may not be available for some locked account types.
Did someone report me to get my Snapchat locked?
Reports can lead to a review, but Snapchat decides based on its own rules. If you think a report was false or part of a group effort, say so in your appeal and explain why the content or behaviour did not break the rules.
Is my Snapchat account deleted if it is locked?
A locked account is not the same as a deleted one. Write down the date of the lock and act early, because if you live in the EU you have at least six months from the day you were told about the decision to use Snapchat's internal complaint system.
