Snapchat locked you by mistake?

Updated 21 October 2026

Why acting early matters: Your EU complaint window is at least six months from the day Snapchat told you about the decision. The longer an account is down, the more followers, customers and conversations move on. See what is at stake

If Snapchat locked your account by mistake, show it with evidence: security emails proving a hack, proof of your age, or a clear timeline showing your activity was normal. Use Snapchat's official route first: the appeal option in the app, or the Support Bot if the account was locked after a hack. If you live in the EU, Snapchat must tell you whether automated tools were used, and your complaint must not be decided by a machine alone.

How mistaken locks happen

How to write to Snapchat Support

Keep it short and concrete. For example: "My account was accessed from a new device on 14 May. I received an email about it that I did not trigger. The spam messages sent that day were not from me. I have since changed my email password." Avoid insults or threats. They do not help a reviewer.

Your EU rights when the decision was wrong

If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act gives you:

Outside the EU, Snapchat Support is your main route.

If the lock turned out to be temporary, see Snapchat account temporarily locked. If Support already said no, read Snapchat appeal denied.

What you stand to lose

A ban on Snapchat takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.

  • Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
  • Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
  • The followers, subscribers or community you built
  • Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
  • Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account

On Snapchat specifically

  • Snapchat's help pages say you can't reopen an account locked for breaking its rules yourself. Snapchat may also have removed content or banned your device.
  • Your one appeal. Snapchat's help pages say you can appeal a lock only once. If the appeal is denied, you can't send another.
  • Your Memories. Snapchat points locked users to its data download for Memories and other data.

Deadlines that are already running

  • Snapchat's help pages say you can request your Memories and other data at accounts.snapchat.com under My Data. Data may not be available for some types of locked accounts.
  • Complaint to Snapchat: open for at least six months from the day Snapchat told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
  • Copy of your data: free, and Snapchat must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.

Questions people ask

My Snapchat was hacked and then locked. What should I do?

Secure the email address and phone number linked to the account first. Then follow Snapchat's help page for compromised accounts. If the account was locked to keep it safe, Snapchat points you to its Support Bot. Explain which activity was not yours. Emails about password or email changes you did not make are useful evidence.

Snapchat thinks I am under 13. How do I prove my age?

Snapchat's terms set the minimum age at 13, or higher where local law requires it. Follow the age or identity check Snapchat offers in its official flow. Only share documents through that flow. If you live in the EU, you can ask whether automated tools were used to judge your age.

Can mass reports get my Snapchat locked?

Reports can trigger a review, and a review can end in a lock. If you think a group reported you falsely, explain that in your appeal and show that the content or behaviour did not break the rules.

Did using a friend's phone get my Snapchat locked?

Logins from unfamiliar devices can look like a compromised account. If that is what happened, say so plainly in your appeal and log in only from your own device afterwards.
