How long does a Snapchat lock last?

Updated 21 October 2026

Why acting early matters: Your EU complaint window is at least six months from the day Snapchat told you about the decision. The longer an account is down, the more followers, customers and conversations move on. See what is at stake

There is no single length for every Snapchat lock. For appeals, Snapchat's help pages say a review can take up to 30 days. A temporary lock usually ends after a waiting period once the cause is gone. If you live in the EU, the law gives you reliable timelines: at least six months to complain internally, 90 days for a dispute body to decide, and one month for Snapchat to answer a data request.

Why the wait varies

How long you wait depends on:

How to wait without making it longer

  1. Remove unofficial apps, plugins and tweaks first.
  2. Wait before you try to log in again. Then try once, with the official app, on your usual device.
  3. Do not let friends log in for you to save streaks.
  4. If you contact Snapchat Support, send one clear message and keep the confirmation.
  5. Follow up once after a reasonable wait, quoting the date of your first message.

Your streaks while you wait

Streaks depend on regular snaps, so a long lock will likely end them. Snapchat sometimes offers ways to restore a lost streak, but whether that applies to a locked account is up to Snapchat. Tell your closest friends what happened so they know it is not personal.

If you live in the EU, these timelines come from the law:

The deadline calculator works out these dates from the day of your lock.

Outside the EU, these timelines do not apply in the same way. Snapchat's own process sets the pace.

When waiting is not enough

If the lock is permanent, waiting will not end it. Read permanently banned from Snapchat. If Support already said no, see Snapchat appeal denied.

What you stand to lose

A ban on Snapchat takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.

  • Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
  • Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
  • The followers, subscribers or community you built
  • Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
  • Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account

On Snapchat specifically

  • Snapchat's help pages say you can't reopen an account locked for breaking its rules yourself. Snapchat may also have removed content or banned your device.
  • Your one appeal. Snapchat's help pages say you can appeal a lock only once. If the appeal is denied, you can't send another.
  • Your Memories. Snapchat points locked users to its data download for Memories and other data.

Deadlines that are already running

  • Snapchat's help pages say you can request your Memories and other data at accounts.snapchat.com under My Data. Data may not be available for some types of locked accounts.
  • Complaint to Snapchat: open for at least six months from the day Snapchat told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
  • Copy of your data: free, and Snapchat must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.

Questions people ask

How long does a temporary Snapchat lock last?

If an unofficial app caused it, the message or email from Snapchat says when the lock ends. For other temporary locks, Snapchat's help pages say to wait 48 hours and try again. It depends on the reason and on whether the cause, such as an unofficial app, has been removed. Repeated login attempts can make the wait longer.

How long does Snapchat Support take to answer an appeal?

Snapchat's help pages say the review of a lock appeal can take up to 30 days. You get the result by email or in the app. Sending extra support tickets does not speed it up.

How long do I have to challenge a Snapchat lock in the EU?

You can use Snapchat's internal complaint system for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision. You can also go to a certified dispute body, with or without using the internal complaint first. Acting early makes evidence easier to gather.
