How long does an X suspension last?
Updated 21 October 2026
How long an X restriction lasts depends on which one you have. A temporary limit usually ends after a set time or once you complete a step. A suspension can be temporary or permanent, so read X's notice closely. X does not promise a fixed time for appeals. The deadlines you can count on come from EU law if you live in the EU: at least six months to complain for free, 90 days for a dispute body to decide, and one month for a data request.
How long each kind of X action lasts
- Reduced visibility on a post: stays on that post unless X removes the label after a review.
- Temporary limit: the notice usually shows a time or a step, such as deleting a flagged post. Some limits end when the timer runs out.
- Locked account: lasts until you complete the verification steps X asks for.
- Suspension: X says it can be temporary or, in some cases, permanent. If no end is shown, treat it as open ended and appeal.
- Permanent suspension: X says it will not end. You can still challenge it.
If you are unsure which one you have, see X account restricted or locked and X account suspended.
How long an X appeal takes
X does not publish a guaranteed response time. Some appeals get an answer quickly, some take a long time, and some people never hear back. Anyone who gives you a precise number is guessing.
What you can do:
- File one clear appeal, not ten. Duplicates do not move you up a queue.
- Keep the confirmation email or case number.
- Write down the date and time you appealed, so you can show how long you waited.
In the EU, complaints must be handled in a timely, careful way and not by automated means alone. A very fast rejection or a very long silence are both worth noting.
The legal deadlines
These apply if you live in the EU.
- At least six months to complain. Under the Digital Services Act, X's internal complaint system must be open to you free of charge for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision.
- 90 days for a dispute body. A certified out-of-court dispute settlement body decides within 90 days of receiving your complaint, or up to 90 days longer in very complex cases. User Rights lists X. You do not have to wait for X's answer to go there.
- One month for your data. A GDPR access request must be answered within one month, with up to two more months for complex requests if X tells you why.
- Without undue delay. If your complaint shows the decision was wrong, X must reverse it without undue delay.
Our deadline calculator works out these dates from your notice.
What to do while you wait
- Request your archive if you still have access.
- Tell followers elsewhere, briefly and calmly, if they need to reach you.
- Do not open a new account. X treats it as evasion and it can reset your situation.
- Ignore anyone who offers a faster review for money.
Outside the EU, these legal deadlines do not apply, and X's own appeal is your main route. If you already got a rejection, read X appeal denied.

What you stand to lose
A ban on X takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On X specifically
- Creator revenue sharing payouts. X's creator revenue sharing terms say X may withhold, suspend or recoup payouts if it believes your account breaks its terms.
Deadlines that are already running
- X's help pages say suspended accounts can submit a request to access their information.
- Complaint to X: open for at least six months from the day X told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and X must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
How long does an X temporary limit last?
The notice usually shows a time or the steps needed to lift it. Some limits end once you verify your account or delete a flagged post, others after a set wait. Check the notice rather than relying on what others report.
How long does X take to answer a suspension appeal?
X does not guarantee a time for every appeal. Some people hear back quickly, others wait much longer or hear nothing. In the EU, the law requires timely handling but does not set a day count.
Do X suspensions expire by themselves?
A temporary limit can end by itself. X's help pages say a suspension can be temporary or, in some cases, permanent. If no end is shown, appeal rather than wait.
How long do I have to challenge an X suspension in the EU?
X's internal complaint system must be open to you for free for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision. The date on the notice is your starting point.
