X says: This account is temporarily restricted
Caution: This account is temporarily restricted. You're seeing this warning because there has been some unusual activity from this account.
"Caution: This account is temporarily restricted" is a warning X shows to people visiting your profile after it noticed unusual activity. Your account is not suspended. Log in, complete any steps X asks for, secure the account, and appeal if you think the label is wrong.
What this message means
X places a warning screen in front of your profile and may limit what the account can do for a while. Visitors have to click through before they see your posts. X says it shows this because of "unusual activity": bursts of follows, likes or posts, logins that look strange, or behaviour its systems link to spam or rule breaks.
What it does not mean
- It does not mean your account is suspended or will be deleted.
- It does not mean someone has proven you broke a rule.
- It does not tell you how long it lasts. "Temporarily" has no fixed date.
What to do now
- Screenshot your profile with the warning, and note the date.
- Log in and look for prompts. X may ask you to confirm your phone number or email, pass a check, or remove a post.
- Change your password and turn on two-factor authentication. Check connected apps in settings and remove anything you do not recognise.
- Slow down. Avoid mass following, mass liking and posting the same link many times.
- Appeal through X's help forms if the warning stays and you think it is wrong.
- Keep a record of any drop in reach or lost work, especially if you use X for business.
If the warning turns into a full suspension, read X account suspended.
The EU route
If you live in the EU, a warning label and feature limits can count as a restriction under the Digital Services Act (DSA). X must give a clear statement of reasons: the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge it. You get a free internal complaint for at least six months, not decided by automated means alone. You can also go to User Rights, a certified dispute body that lists X, which decides within 90 days of receiving your complaint. The GDPR gives you a free copy of your data, and court stays open.
Outside the EU, X's own help forms are your main route. More on the X page.
Watch out for scams
The caution label makes some people panic and reply to "support" accounts. X does not fix restrictions through DMs. Never share your password or codes, and never pay anyone.
Questions people ask
Is a temporarily restricted X account suspended?
No. A restriction is a softer step. Your account still exists, but some features are limited and visitors may see a warning before your profile. A suspension blocks posting completely.
Why does my X profile show a caution warning?
X shows this warning when it sees unusual activity, such as many follows or posts in a short time, or signs that the account may be compromised. It can also follow a rule violation.
How do I remove the restriction on X?
Log in and follow any steps X shows, such as confirming your phone number or email or removing a post. Secure your account and use it normally. If you think the label is wrong, appeal and keep a screenshot.
