Restricted on Twitch?
Updated 21 October 2026
If something on Twitch stopped working but your account is not suspended, the cause is usually either a channel setting or a decision by Twitch about specific content. Channel limits come from streamers and their moderators. If Twitch itself removed a clip, limited a feature or reduced where your stream appears, and you live in the EU, it must tell you why and let you complain for free.
Channel limits versus Twitch limits
Many restrictions viewers hit are set by the channel:
- Follower only or subscriber only chat.
- Chat that needs a verified phone number or email.
- A timeout or ban from the channel's moderators or a moderation bot.
The chat box usually explains which applies. These are not Twitch's decisions about your account, so you resolve them with the channel.
Twitch itself can also act on less than your whole account:
- Removing content, such as a clip, VOD or highlight.
- Limiting features, for example a chatting or streaming suspension, which Twitch has used for lighter breaches since 2026.
- Reducing visibility, for example through how a stream is labelled or recommended.
- Ending or pausing monetisation on a channel.
If a clip or VOD was removed
Check the email or notice. A removal for a copyright claim follows a separate process from a guideline decision, and the notice should say so. For a guideline removal, the notice should name the rule.
If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act (Art. 17) requires a clear and specific statement of reasons when Twitch removes content or limits its visibility: the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge it.
If your reach or features dropped
This is the hardest kind to prove, so build a record:
- Note the date the change started and what you see, such as fewer viewers from browse pages or a feature that is greyed out.
- Screenshot your settings, any labels on your stream and any message from Twitch.
- Compare with your normal numbers from your own analytics.
- Ask Twitch for the reasons if you got none.
Lower views alone do not prove a restriction. A missing feature or a notice does.
How to challenge it
If you live in the EU, you can use Twitch's internal complaint system for free, for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision (DSA Art. 20). A person must be involved. If it was wrong, Twitch must reverse it without undue delay.
You can also go to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body (Art. 21). No certified body lists Twitch by name yet, but general bodies may still take a case. Use the dispute body finder. Outside the EU, Twitch's own appeal is the main route.
Don't escalate it yourself
Don't switch to a second channel to get around a feature limit. Twitch can treat that as ban evasion. Don't re-upload removed clips without dealing with the reason. If the restriction becomes a full suspension, read suspended on Twitch. If you earn on Twitch and monetisation was paused, see Twitch business accounts.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Twitch takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On Twitch specifically
- Bits and subscriptions you bought. Twitch's help pages say that during an indefinite suspension you can't use items you bought, such as Bits and subscriptions, and recurring subscriptions don't renew.
- Your subscribers and monetization. Twitch's help pages say a monetized streamer can't use monetization tools during an indefinite suspension, and existing subscriptions to the channel don't renew.
Deadlines that are already running
- Twitch's help pages say you can appeal enforcements issued within the last six months, or your most recent one if you are serving an indefinite suspension. Appeals go only through appeals.twitch.tv.
- Complaint to Twitch: open for at least six months from the day Twitch told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Twitch must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
Why can't I chat in a Twitch channel?
Most often the channel has settings such as follower only, subscriber only, verified phone or email, or a timeout from a moderator. Those come from the channel, not from Twitch. Check the message shown in the chat box.
Why was my Twitch clip or VOD removed?
Twitch removes content for guideline breaches and for copyright claims, such as music in the background. The email or notice should say which one. Copyright claims follow a separate process from guideline decisions.
Does Twitch limit the reach of some streams?
Twitch uses content classification labels, and viewers who filter a label do not get those streams recommended. Some labels also keep a stream off homepage recommendations. If you think Twitch itself is limiting your stream's visibility without telling you, keep evidence and ask for the reasons.
Do EU rules cover a removed clip, not just a ban?
Yes. If you live in the EU, the DSA requires a statement of reasons when a platform removes content or limits its visibility, and you can complain about those decisions for free.
