Threads account restricted?
Updated 21 October 2026
If your Threads profile still works but your views collapsed, your replies seem invisible or you can't post or follow, you may be under a restriction. Open Account status in your Threads settings: it should show removed posts and what can't be recommended. Use the option to disagree where it's offered. If you live in the EU, a limit on your visibility is a decision Meta must explain.
Restriction or something else?
On Threads, a lot of things look like a restriction but aren't. Rule these out first.
- Hidden by the author. The person who started a thread can hide replies or limit who can reply. That's their setting, not a penalty on you.
- Feed changes. What Threads recommends changes over time. A slow week isn't always a limit.
- Blocked or muted. Individual users can block or mute you.
A real restriction usually shows in your account status, or appears as a message when you try to act.
The restrictions people meet on Threads
- Recommendation limits. Your posts stop appearing to people who don't follow you.
- Action blocks. You can't follow, like or reply for a while. If a message appears when you try, screenshot it.
- Posting limits. You can't post for a set period after content was removed.
- Reply limits. Your replies show up less, or not at all, in other people's threads.
What to do
- Check account status. Note removed posts and whether recommendations are limited.
- Request a review for each item you think is wrong.
- Slow down. Stop mass replying, copy-paste replies and fast following for a few days.
- Remove tools. Disconnect any scheduler or automation that posts on your behalf.
- Save your stats. Screenshot your views before and after, with dates.
Restrictions and EU law
If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act doesn't only cover bans. It also covers decisions that limit the visibility of your content and decisions that suspend or end monetisation. For those, Meta must give a statement of reasons: the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used and how to challenge it.
You can then:
- File a free internal complaint for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision. It must not be handled by automated means alone.
- Go to a certified out-of-court dispute body. It decides within 90 days of receiving your complaint. Appeals Centre Europe lists Threads and reviews removed posts and suspended or disabled accounts, though it leaves out some cases, such as hacked accounts and spam. User Rights and Platform Control list Instagram, not Threads, so ask them first. If the Threads block comes from an Instagram decision, you can take that Instagram decision to any of them.
- Ask Meta for a free copy of your data under the GDPR. Meta has one month to answer.
Court stays open. Outside the EU, the in-app review is your main route.
Don't make it worse
- Don't buy followers or engagement. It's a common reason for limits.
- Don't give your Instagram login to growth services or anyone promising to lift a "shadowban".
- Don't open a second profile to post around the limit.
If the restriction becomes a lock, see Threads account suspended. If Threads matters for your business, read Threads business account banned. The Threads hub has the full picture.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Threads takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
Deadlines that are already running
- Complaint to Threads: open for at least six months from the day Threads told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Threads must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
Why did my Threads views suddenly drop?
It can be a normal change in what the feed shows, or a limit on recommending your posts to people who don't follow you. Check Account status in your Threads settings for any recommendation limit. If you live in the EU and your visibility was limited by a decision, Meta must explain it.
Why are my replies hidden on Threads?
The person who started the thread can hide replies or limit who can reply, and that has nothing to do with your account. If only one person's threads are affected, it is likely their setting, not a restriction on you.
Can I appeal a Threads restriction?
Where Meta shows the restriction in your account status, there is often an option to disagree. If you live in the EU, you can also file a free internal complaint and go to a certified dispute body.
