Threads account disabled?
Updated 21 October 2026
If you can't use Threads because it is disabled, first check whether the notice is about your Threads profile or about the Instagram account behind it. Then use the option to disagree in that notice, after taking screenshots. If Instagram is the account disabled, appeal there. If you live in the EU, you can also file a free complaint, use a dispute body and request your data.
Step one: which account was disabled?
This decides everything else.
- Instagram works, Threads doesn't. The decision is about your Threads profile. Read the notice in the Threads app.
- Neither works. The Instagram account behind your profile is probably disabled. Read the notice on the Instagram login screen and follow Instagram account disabled.
- Not sure. Try logging in to Instagram on the web. Whatever message you see there tells you whether Instagram is the problem.
Screenshot every notice you find, with the date.
Disagreeing with a Threads decision
If the notice is about Threads:
- Read the reason. Note the rule and any post or reply it mentions.
- Follow the on-screen steps in the notice to ask for a review. You may be asked to confirm it's you.
- Keep your explanation short. Name the post, say why it didn't break the rule and add any missing context. On Threads, context is often the issue: a reply that looks harsh alone may make sense in the conversation.
- Note the date you appealed.
Then wait for the result in the app. Sending the same appeal many times doesn't help.
Your rights if you live in the EU
Threads is run by Meta, and the Digital Services Act applies to its decisions:
- Statement of reasons. Meta must explain the decision clearly: the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used and how to challenge it.
- Free internal complaint for at least six months from the day you were told about the decision, handled with care and not by automated means alone.
- Reversal without undue delay if your complaint shows the decision was wrong.
- A certified dispute body. You can go to one even without using the internal complaint. It decides within 90 days of receiving your complaint. Appeals Centre Europe lists Threads and reviews removed posts and suspended or disabled accounts, though it leaves out some cases, such as hacked accounts and spam. User Rights and Platform Control list Instagram, not Threads, so ask them first. If the Threads block comes from an Instagram decision, you can take that Instagram decision to any of them. General bodies may also accept it.
- Court stays open.
You can also ask Meta for a free copy of your personal data under the GDPR. Meta has one month to answer. That includes your Threads posts.
Outside the EU, the in-app appeal is the main route.
What not to do
- Don't sign up for a new Threads profile with another Instagram account. Meta is likely to see it as evading the ban, and it can put your other accounts at risk.
- Don't share your Instagram password or login codes with anyone offering help.
- Don't pay for "unban" services. They can't do more than you can.
If the appeal fails

What you stand to lose
A ban on Threads takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
Deadlines that are already running
- Complaint to Threads: open for at least six months from the day Threads told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Threads must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
Why can't I log in to Threads but Instagram works?
Then the decision is probably about your Threads profile only. Open Threads and read the notice, which tells you whether you can ask for a review. Your Instagram account should not be affected by that notice.
My Instagram was disabled. Is my Threads profile gone?
If you created Threads with that Instagram account, expect to lose Threads too, because Meta manages such profiles through the Instagram account. Focus your appeal on the Instagram account.
Can I move my Threads followers to another account?
Not while the profile is disabled. Opening a new Threads or Instagram account to rebuild your following is likely to count as ban evasion. Use the appeal and your legal routes first.
