Permanently banned from Threads?

Updated 21 October 2026

Why acting early matters: Your EU complaint window is at least six months from the day Threads told you about the decision. The longer an account is down, the more followers, customers and conversations move on. See what is at stake

A "permanent" Threads notice means Meta won't review the decision again in the app. It doesn't remove your legal rights. If you live in the EU, a certified dispute body can still look at the decision and your right to go to court stays. Check whether your Instagram account is affected, and ask Meta for a copy of your Threads posts now.

First, check what is permanent

On Threads, "permanent" can mean two different things:

Screenshot every notice and write down the date and which app showed it.

What "permanent" means under EU law

For people who live in the EU, the Digital Services Act keeps several routes open after Meta's internal process ends:

  1. You are owed reasons. Meta must give a clear statement of reasons when it closes an account: the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used and how to challenge it.
  2. An independent body can review it. You can go to a certified out-of-court dispute body, whether or not you used the internal complaint. It is free or costs a small fee. If you win, Meta pays the fees and your reasonable costs. It decides within 90 days of receiving your complaint. The decision isn't binding, but Meta must take part in good faith.
  3. Court stays open.

Appeals Centre Europe lists Threads and reviews removed posts and suspended or disabled accounts, though it leaves out some cases, such as hacked accounts and spam. User Rights and Platform Control list Instagram, not Threads, so ask them first. If the Threads block comes from an Instagram decision, you can take that Instagram decision to any of them. General bodies may also accept it.

Outside the EU, a permanent notice usually means the in-app route is closed.

Keep your posts and contacts

Your Threads posts and replies are your personal data. Under the GDPR you can ask Meta for a free copy. Meta must answer within one month, or up to two more months for complex requests if it tells you why. Ask specifically for your Threads content so it isn't missed.

If your Instagram still works, you can let your audience know there where to find you.

Arguing proportion

A dispute body can look at more than whether a rule was broken. On Threads, a permanent ban sometimes follows a single reply in a heated debate. You can argue:

Save the full thread and explain it calmly.

Scams to watch for

After a permanent ban, offers of "guaranteed reinstatement" increase. Anyone asking for your password or a fee is not working with Meta.

What you stand to lose

A ban on Threads takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.

  • Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
  • Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
  • The followers, subscribers or community you built
  • Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
  • Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account

Deadlines that are already running

  • Complaint to Threads: open for at least six months from the day Threads told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
  • Copy of your data: free, and Threads must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.

Questions people ask

Does a permanent Threads ban close my Instagram account?

Not necessarily. Meta can disable a Threads profile while the Instagram account keeps working. Read the notice to see which account it names, and check that you can still log in to Instagram.

Can I start a new Threads profile from another Instagram account?

Meta's terms don't allow new accounts to get around a disabled one. A new profile is likely to be removed, and it can put the Instagram account you use for it at risk as well.

Will my Threads posts be deleted after a permanent ban?

Meta doesn't say exactly when content is deleted after a profile is disabled. If you live in the EU, ask Meta for a copy of your personal data under the GDPR as soon as you can. It's free.
