How long does a Tumblr ban last?

Updated 21 October 2026

Why acting early matters: Tumblr's help pages say you can appeal up to 6 months after the first moderation decision. The longer an account is down, the more followers, customers and conversations move on. See what is at stake

Tumblr does not publish a fixed review time. Its help pages say appeals are reviewed by humans without undue delay, and that you can appeal up to six months after the first decision. If you live in the EU, the clearest time limits come from the law: at least six months for your complaint, 90 days for a dispute body, one month for a data request.

How long the ban itself lasts

That depends on what Tumblr did:

If you live in the EU, the notice must say what was decided (DSA Art. 17). If yours leaves the length unclear, ask Tumblr to state it.

Your time limits

Appeal to Tumblr: up to six months. Tumblr's help pages say you can appeal up to six months after the first moderation decision. In the EU, DSA Art. 20 sets a minimum of six months for the internal complaint as well. Count from the date of the email, not from the day you noticed.

Dispute body: no fixed start. Under DSA Art. 21 you can go to a certified body without waiting for the internal complaint to finish. Ask the body whether your case is still in time before you file.

Use the deadline calculator to turn your notice date into real dates.

Tumblr's time limits

Your appeal. Tumblr's help pages say "without undue delay" and give no number of days. In the EU, your complaint must be handled in a timely, diligent and non-arbitrary way, not by automated means alone. If it shows the decision was wrong, Tumblr must reverse it without undue delay.

A dispute body case. The body decides within 90 days of receiving your complete complaint. The clock starts when your file is complete, so send everything at once.

Your data. Tumblr has a data download in the privacy settings. Its help pages say it can take up to 30 days, and you need to be signed in. A formal request under GDPR Art. 15 to [email protected] must be answered within one month, or up to two more months for complex requests if Tumblr tells you why.

Act fast on your blog export

One time limit is short. Tumblr's help pages say blog export backups are only kept for three days, and you can export each blog up to four times a month. If you still have access to any blog, export it now and download the file the same day.

What to do while you wait

If you hear nothing for weeks and you live in the EU, you do not have to keep waiting: a dispute body is open to you. No certified body lists Tumblr for account decisions yet, so use the dispute body finder and ask a general body first.

Outside the EU, Tumblr's appeal is your main route and there is no legal time limit for its answer.

What you stand to lose

A ban on Tumblr takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.

  • Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
  • Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
  • The followers, subscribers or community you built
  • Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
  • Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account

On Tumblr specifically

  • Tumblr's terms say that when your account is terminated, your right to use the service and any content ends at once. Tumblr makes reasonable efforts to make your content inaccessible, but reblogs by others may stay.
  • Things you paid for. Tumblr's terms say purchases are final and that termination may mean you lose paid services, for example your licence to Premium Themes.
  • Your Premium subscription. Tumblr's help pages say it does not offer refunds for Tumblr Premium, which includes Ad-Free.
  • Blaze. Tumblr's help pages say posts on a terminated blog cannot be Blazed, and money for an active Blaze campaign is not returned.

Deadlines that are already running

  • Tumblr's help pages say you can appeal up to 6 months after the first moderation decision.
  • Complaint to Tumblr: open for at least six months from the day Tumblr told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
  • Copy of your data: free, and Tumblr must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
