Tumblr appeal denied?
Updated 21 October 2026
If Tumblr denied your appeal, its own process is mostly at an end. If you live in the EU, it is not the end: you can take the decision to a certified out-of-court dispute body, ask for a copy of your data, and still go to court. Tumblr's own help pages mention dispute bodies and say Tumblr will engage with them.
What a denial means
Tumblr's help pages say your appeal is reviewed by humans and that you then get the final decision. For flagged posts, a post that a trained reviewer already checked cannot be appealed again in the app. Sending the same appeal over and over will not change the answer and may slow other replies.
Before the next step, save the denial email and your original appeal. Note both dates.
Step 1: check the reasons you got
If you live in the EU, Tumblr had to give you a clear and specific statement of reasons (DSA Art. 17), both for the first decision and when it answered your complaint. Look at what you have:
- Does it name the post or posts?
- Does it name the rule, not just "User Guidelines"?
- Does it say whether automated tools were used?
- Does it tell you how to challenge the decision?
Every gap is a point you can raise with a dispute body.
Step 2: a dispute body
Under DSA Art. 21, you can take Tumblr's decision to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body. It is free or a nominal fee for you. The body decides within 90 days of receiving your complete complaint. If you win, Tumblr pays the fees and your reasonable costs. The decision is not binding, but Tumblr must engage in good faith.
The honest catch: no certified body lists Tumblr by name for account decisions yet. One body names Tumblr, but it only takes illegal content cases, not bans under the rules. Some general bodies take cases from any platform. Use the dispute body finder, pick a general body, and ask whether it will take a Tumblr account case before you file.
A strong file has the notice, the denial, your appeal, the dates, and a short account of why the decision is wrong.
Step 3: ask for your data
Under GDPR Art. 15, you can ask for a free copy of your personal data. Write to [email protected] and ask for everything about your account, including records of the moderation decision. Tumblr must answer within one month, or within up to two more months for complex requests if it tells you why. Tumblr's help pages say that if it refuses a privacy request, you can reply in writing to the refusal.
Step 4: court
Your right to go to court stays. Tumblr's terms name courts in New York. Whether you can sue closer to home is a question for a lawyer, and court is usually the last step.
Outside the EU
These rules protect people who live in the EU. Outside the EU, there is no dispute body route, and after a denial your options are mostly a new, better written request through tumblr.com/support if you have real new facts.
What not to do
Do not open a new account to carry on. Do not post the denial with insults about Tumblr staff. Do not pay anyone who says they can reverse it. If the original decision was a mistake, such as a hacked account, read banned by mistake on Tumblr. For what "terminated" means long term, see permanently banned on Tumblr, or go back to the Tumblr overview.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Tumblr takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On Tumblr specifically
- Tumblr's terms say that when your account is terminated, your right to use the service and any content ends at once. Tumblr makes reasonable efforts to make your content inaccessible, but reblogs by others may stay.
- Things you paid for. Tumblr's terms say purchases are final and that termination may mean you lose paid services, for example your licence to Premium Themes.
- Your Premium subscription. Tumblr's help pages say it does not offer refunds for Tumblr Premium, which includes Ad-Free.
- Blaze. Tumblr's help pages say posts on a terminated blog cannot be Blazed, and money for an active Blaze campaign is not returned.
Deadlines that are already running
- Tumblr's help pages say you can appeal up to 6 months after the first moderation decision.
- Complaint to Tumblr: open for at least six months from the day Tumblr told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Tumblr must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
Can I appeal again after Tumblr denied my appeal?
Tumblr's help pages describe one appeal and a final decision. For flagged posts, a post already checked by a trained reviewer cannot be appealed again in the app. If you live in the EU, you can still go to a certified dispute body.
Which dispute body takes Tumblr cases?
No certified body lists Tumblr for account decisions yet. One body names Tumblr, but only for illegal content. Some general bodies accept cases from any platform, so ask them before you file.
Does Tumblr have to take part in a dispute body case?
Under the Digital Services Act, platforms must engage in good faith with a certified body. Tumblr's help pages say it will engage with the body as required. The body's decision is not binding.
Can I ask Tumblr what data it holds on my ban?
Yes. You can ask for a free copy of your personal data under GDPR Art. 15. Tumblr's privacy contact is [email protected], and it must answer within one month.
