Banned on Tumblr by mistake?
Updated 21 October 2026
If Tumblr banned you for something you did not do, your appeal must show the mistake, not just say it. Appeal through tumblr.com/support with clear facts: who had access, what the post really shows, or when the reports started. Tumblr's help pages say a human reviews appeals. If you live in the EU, the review cannot be by automated means alone, and a wrong decision must be reversed without undue delay.
The common mistakes on Tumblr
Hacked account. Someone got in and posted spam or worse. Tumblr sees a rule breach on your blog and acts.
Wrong explicit flag. Automated systems can misread art, anatomy drawings, medical content or swimwear as explicit. Tumblr's help pages say a blog that shares mature content without content labels may be marked as mature as a whole.
Report waves. A group reports your blog many times after a fandom fight or a viral post. Reports can trigger a review even when nothing was wrong.
Age errors. Tumblr's minimum age in the EU is 16. Its help pages say entering a fake birthday can result in termination. A typo in the year can look like a fake birthday.
Mistaken identity. Your blog is taken for a spam network or for someone else's banned blog.
How to show it was a mistake
Match the evidence to your case:
- Hacked: the date you lost control, security or password reset emails, posts you did not write, and proof that you secured your email account.
- Wrong flag: a short description of what each image shows, and why it is not sexual content. Use the flagged posts review in your blog settings for single posts.
- Report wave: screenshots of threats or calls to report you, with dates.
- Age: your real birth year. Do not send more ID than Tumblr asks for.
- Mistaken identity: how long you have run the blog, and what makes it yours.
Keep your appeal to a few short paragraphs. Put the most important fact first.
Where to send it
- Terminated blog or account: tumblr.com/support, category Terminated account.
- Blog marked explicit or mature: tumblr.com/support, category for a blog incorrectly marked as explicit or mature, from the account's email.
- Flagged posts: the review option in your blog settings.
Do not reply to the notification email. Tumblr's help pages say those replies do not reach it. You have up to six months.
If you reported someone else and Tumblr rejected your report, there is a separate route at tumblr.com/abuse.
Your EU rights
If you live in the EU, Tumblr must tell you the facts and the rule, and whether automated tools were used (DSA Art. 17). If the email says nothing about automation and you suspect it, ask. Your complaint must be handled by more than a machine (DSA Art. 20).
If Tumblr keeps the decision, a certified out-of-court dispute body can look at it (DSA Art. 21). No body lists Tumblr for account decisions yet, so use the dispute body finder and ask a general body first. A copy of your data under GDPR Art. 15 can show login records that support a hacking claim. Write to [email protected].
Outside the EU, the support form is your main route.
Avoid making it look worse
Do not open a second account to post your side of the story. Do not ask friends to report the people who reported you. And never give your password to anyone offering to clear your name: that is how many Tumblr accounts get hacked in the first place.
If the appeal was already rejected, read Tumblr appeal denied. For flags and labels in detail, see Tumblr posts flagged or reach limited. The Tumblr overview has the rest.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Tumblr takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On Tumblr specifically
- Tumblr's terms say that when your account is terminated, your right to use the service and any content ends at once. Tumblr makes reasonable efforts to make your content inaccessible, but reblogs by others may stay.
- Things you paid for. Tumblr's terms say purchases are final and that termination may mean you lose paid services, for example your licence to Premium Themes.
- Your Premium subscription. Tumblr's help pages say it does not offer refunds for Tumblr Premium, which includes Ad-Free.
- Blaze. Tumblr's help pages say posts on a terminated blog cannot be Blazed, and money for an active Blaze campaign is not returned.
Deadlines that are already running
- Tumblr's help pages say you can appeal up to 6 months after the first moderation decision.
- Complaint to Tumblr: open for at least six months from the day Tumblr told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Tumblr must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
My Tumblr was hacked and then banned. What do I do?
Appeal through tumblr.com/support and say clearly that someone else had access. Give the date you lost control and any security emails you got. Change the password of your email account first.
Tumblr flagged my art as explicit. Is that a mistake?
It can be. Automated flags can misread art, medical images or fully clothed photos. Use the flagged posts review in your blog settings and explain briefly what the image shows.
Can a wrong birthday get my Tumblr banned?
Tumblr's help pages say entering a fake birthday can result in termination. In the EU, Tumblr's minimum age is 16. If your age was recorded wrongly, say so in your appeal.
Can mass reports get a Tumblr blog banned?
Reports can trigger a review. A report is not proof of a breach. If a wave of reports came right before your ban, mention it and keep screenshots of any threats.
