Bluesky account suspended?
Updated 21 October 2026
If Bluesky shows "Your account has been suspended", appeal within two weeks. That is the limit in Bluesky's terms. Read the email Bluesky sent you, then tap the appeal button on the suspension screen and explain why the decision is wrong. If you live in the EU, you also have a right to clear reasons and access to an independent dispute body.
What the suspension means
The screen says your account was found to break Bluesky's terms. Bluesky's app says you were sent an email outlining the specific violation and the suspension period, if there is one. While you are suspended, you can only appeal or sign out.
Bluesky says its notices should tell you:
- which Community Guidelines policy you broke,
- how serious the violation was,
- how many violations you have,
- how close you are to the next step,
- when the suspension ends.
Bluesky's 2025 transparency report says suspensions start short and get longer as strikes add up, and can end in a permanent ban. So even a short suspension matters. If it was a mistake, appeal it.
How to appeal
- Screenshot the screen and the email, with the date. Check your spam folder.
- Tap the appeal button on the suspension screen. Bluesky says account suspensions are appealed in the app. For a single removed post, email [email protected].
- Make it complete. The app says you can appeal once per decision. Bluesky's terms say appeals without supporting detail may not be reviewed.
- Stick to facts. Which post, what you meant, why it fits the rules. For example: "The post quoted a slur to report it. I was the target, not the author."
- Wait for the email. After you send it, the app says you will get an email if your appeal succeeds.
Bluesky says a successful appeal ends the suspension at once and restores your account standing. That matters for your strike count.
Your rights if you live in the EU
Under the Digital Services Act, Bluesky must give you a clear and specific statement of reasons: the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used and how to challenge it. If your email is missing any of that, say so in your appeal.
The DSA sets at least six months for appeals on platforms it covers. Bluesky's terms say two weeks. Don't rely on the longer time: appeal within two weeks. You can still use the EU steps after that.
Bluesky's terms say you can pick any certified dispute body and that Bluesky will engage in good faith. You don't need to finish the internal appeal first. No body names Bluesky yet, so ask a general body before you file. The dispute body finder helps. If you win, the platform pays the fees and your reasonable costs. Court stays open.
Outside the EU, the in-app appeal is your main route, with the same two weeks.
While you wait
- Don't open a second account to keep posting. That is likely to count as evading the suspension.
- Don't post about the case from a friend's account in a way that repeats the content.
- Don't pay anyone who promises to lift it.
- If you live in the EU, ask [email protected] for a copy of your data under the GDPR.

What you stand to lose
A ban on Bluesky takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On Bluesky specifically
- Bluesky's privacy policy says that if it suspects you broke its terms, it keeps the relevant data as long as needed to investigate and to enforce the removal.
- Your posts and profile. Under the AT Protocol rules Bluesky publishes, a taken-down account is inactive and its posts, images and data export are no longer passed on.
- Your chats. The Bluesky app says suspended accounts cannot take part in chat.
- Your account for good. Bluesky's 2025 transparency report says most takedowns are permanent, and repeated strikes end in a permanent ban.
Deadlines that are already running
- Bluesky's terms say you must appeal within two weeks of the suspension, termination or restriction. Late appeals, or appeals without enough detail, may not be reviewed.
- Complaint to Bluesky: open for at least six months from the day Bluesky told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Bluesky must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
How long do I have to appeal a Bluesky suspension?
Bluesky's terms say two weeks from the suspension. Appeals filed later may not be reviewed. If you live in the EU, you can still go to a dispute body after that.
Should I just wait for a short suspension to end?
If the email gives an end date and the strike was a mistake, appeal anyway. Bluesky's strikes add up, and later suspensions get longer. A successful appeal also restores your account standing.
Why did Bluesky not tell me which post broke the rules?
Check the email first, including spam. Bluesky says its notices should name the policy, the severity and the end date. If you live in the EU and the reasons are vague, the DSA lets you ask for a clear statement of reasons.
Can I appeal more than once?
The Bluesky app says you can appeal once per decision and a different moderator reviews it. So make your one appeal complete.
