Bluesky appeal denied?

Updated 21 October 2026

Why acting early matters: Bluesky's terms say you must appeal within two weeks of the suspension, termination or restriction. Late appeals, or appeals without enough detail, may not be reviewed. The longer an account is down, the more followers, customers and conversations move on. See what is at stake

If Bluesky turned down your appeal, its internal review is over. If you live in the EU, you still have three steps: ask for a clear statement of reasons, take the decision to a certified dispute body, and ask for a copy of your data. Bluesky's own terms name the dispute body route for EU users. Court stays open too.

What the rejection means

Bluesky's 2025 transparency report says every appeal gets human review. The Bluesky app says you can appeal once per decision and that a different moderator looks at it. So a rejection means a second person kept the decision. Sending the same appeal again is unlikely to change that.

It does not mean the decision was right. It means the next step is outside Bluesky.

Step 1: check the reasons

Under the Digital Services Act, Bluesky must give you a clear and specific statement of reasons for its decision: the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used and how to challenge it. Put your emails side by side and check:

If something is missing, write to [email protected] and ask for it. Keep a copy. A vague decision is a point you can raise with a dispute body.

Step 2: a certified dispute body

Bluesky's terms say EU users can choose any certified dispute body with the right expertise, and that Bluesky will engage in good faith under Article 21. Here is what that means in practice:

No certified body names Bluesky yet. General bodies may still take the case. Use the dispute body finder and ask the body before you file. Send your notice, your appeal and the rejection.

Step 3: your data

Under the GDPR, you can ask for a free copy of your personal data. Email [email protected]. The law gives Bluesky one month to answer, or two more months for complex requests if it tells you why. Ask for the reports and moderation notes linked to your account, not only your posts. They can show what led to the decision.

Step 4: court

Bluesky's terms say EU users can go to the courts of their country of residence. Court costs time and money. Most people try a dispute body first.

If you live outside the EU

These EU steps only protect people who live in the EU, not Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or the UK. Elsewhere, there is little more you can do inside Bluesky after a rejection. Keep your records in case Bluesky's process changes.

What not to do

For time limits, see how long a Bluesky review takes. If the rejection made the ban permanent, read Bluesky permanent ban. The Bluesky hub covers every problem.

What you stand to lose

A ban on Bluesky takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.

  • Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
  • Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
  • The followers, subscribers or community you built
  • Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
  • Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account

On Bluesky specifically

  • Bluesky's privacy policy says that if it suspects you broke its terms, it keeps the relevant data as long as needed to investigate and to enforce the removal.
  • Your posts and profile. Under the AT Protocol rules Bluesky publishes, a taken-down account is inactive and its posts, images and data export are no longer passed on.
  • Your chats. The Bluesky app says suspended accounts cannot take part in chat.
  • Your account for good. Bluesky's 2025 transparency report says most takedowns are permanent, and repeated strikes end in a permanent ban.

Deadlines that are already running

  • Bluesky's terms say you must appeal within two weeks of the suspension, termination or restriction. Late appeals, or appeals without enough detail, may not be reviewed.
  • Complaint to Bluesky: open for at least six months from the day Bluesky told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
  • Copy of your data: free, and Bluesky must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.

Questions people ask

Can I appeal to Bluesky a second time?

The Bluesky app says you can appeal once per decision. Sending the same appeal again is unlikely to help. If you live in the EU, a dispute body is the next step.

Which dispute body handles Bluesky?

No certified body names Bluesky yet. Bluesky's terms say you can choose any certified body with the right expertise. Ask a general body whether it takes Bluesky cases before you file.

Does Bluesky have to follow a dispute body's decision?

No. The decision is not binding. But Bluesky's terms say it will engage in good faith with the body, and if you win, the platform pays the fees and your reasonable costs.

Is it too late if my two weeks are over?

Not for the EU steps. The two weeks in Bluesky's terms are for the internal appeal. If you live in the EU, you can still go to a dispute body or to court.
