LinkedIn says: Your account has been temporarily restricted
Your account has been temporarily restricted
LinkedIn shows messages like "Your account has been temporarily restricted" when it has paused your account, for example after it noticed unusual activity. The exact wording can differ. You often cannot log in or use it until you confirm who you are. Follow the steps LinkedIn shows, verify your identity only inside LinkedIn's own flow, and remove any automation tools.
What this message means
LinkedIn restricts accounts when its systems see something that looks wrong: a sudden burst of profile views or invitations, use of browser extensions that automate actions, logins from unusual places, or signs of a fake or hacked profile. It may also restrict an account after reports. The word "temporarily" means LinkedIn expects the restriction to end once the issue is solved, often by verifying your identity.
What it does not mean
- It does not mean your account is permanently closed.
- It does not prove you broke the User Agreement.
- It does not mean your network has been told why.
What to do now
- Screenshot the notice and any follow-up text, with the date.
- Follow the on-screen steps. LinkedIn may ask you to verify your identity with a government ID.
- Upload ID only inside LinkedIn. Do not send it by email or through a link someone else gave you.
- Remove automation tools and extensions that send invitations, messages or profile visits for you.
- Change your password once you are back in, and turn on two-step verification.
- Contact LinkedIn support through its help center if verification fails or nothing happens.
- Log lost work: missed messages, leads, job applications. This matters if you use LinkedIn professionally.
If you cannot get back in after verifying, read LinkedIn account suspended.
The EU route
If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act (DSA) applies when LinkedIn restricts or suspends your account because of alleged rule breaks:
- LinkedIn must give a clear statement of reasons: the facts, the rule, whether automated tools were used, and how to challenge it.
- You can file a free internal complaint for at least six months. It cannot be decided by automated means alone.
- User Rights is a certified dispute body that lists LinkedIn. You can go there without the internal complaint first. Decision within 90 days of receiving your complaint.
- The GDPR gives you a free copy of your data within one month.
- Court stays open.
Outside the EU, LinkedIn's own verification and support are your main route. More on the LinkedIn page.
Watch out for scams
Fake recruiters and "LinkedIn agents" sometimes contact restricted users. Never send ID or passwords outside LinkedIn's own flow, and never pay for help to lift a restriction.
Questions people ask
Why did LinkedIn restrict my account?
LinkedIn restricts accounts it links to unusual activity, such as many profile views or invitations in a short time, automation tools, fake profiles or possible hacking. It can also follow reports or rule breaks.
Does LinkedIn ask for ID to lift a restriction?
Often yes. LinkedIn's help pages describe identity verification with a government ID for restricted accounts. Only upload it inside LinkedIn's own flow, never to an outside link.
Can my network see that my LinkedIn is restricted?
Your profile may become hard or impossible to view while restricted. People may notice that they can no longer find you or message you.
I use LinkedIn for work. Do I have extra rights?
If you live in the EU and use LinkedIn as a business, the P2B Regulation may also apply. Keep a record of lost leads or income from the day of the restriction.
