Instagram business account banned?
Updated 21 October 2026
If your Instagram creator, shop or brand account was disabled or restricted, appeal from the notice in the app right away, then start a written log of the money you are losing. If you live in the EU, the Digital Services Act gives you a free complaint and an independent dispute body, and the P2B Regulation may give business users extra protection, including notice before termination. Don't move your audience to a new Instagram account in the meantime.
First steps in the first hour
- Screenshot the notice and any emails, including dates and the rule named.
- Disagree with the decision from the notice, in the app.
- Check what else is affected. Look at Meta Business Support Home for the status of ad accounts, catalogues, shops and Pages.
- Tell your team. If other people have access, make sure nobody tries risky workarounds.
- Reach customers elsewhere. Use your email list, website or other channels to say you are temporarily unavailable on Instagram.
Keep a loss log
A loss log is a simple document you update every day while the account is down. It supports your case with a dispute body and, if it ever comes to that, a court.
- Orders, bookings or sales that came through Instagram in a normal week, with evidence.
- Paid collaborations that were cancelled or delayed, with messages.
- Ad spend that was stopped or wasted.
- Hours spent dealing with the ban.
Only write down what you can show. Real figures with screenshots are worth far more than estimates.
Ads, shops and linked accounts
Your Instagram profile, your ad account and your business portfolio can each be restricted separately. An Instagram decision might leave ads running, or the other way round. If the personal Facebook profile that manages your business portfolio is restricted, access to your assets can be affected too. Where Meta's business tools offer a review for an ad account or shop, request it there. That is a separate request from the Instagram appeal.
Your rights if you live in the EU
Under the DSA, Instagram must give a clear statement of reasons when it restricts visibility, stops monetisation, or suspends or closes your account. You can file a free internal complaint for at least six months, and you can go to a certified out-of-court dispute body at any time. Appeals Centre Europe, User Rights and Platform Control list Instagram. They decide within 90 days of receiving your complaint, and if you win, Meta pays the fees and your reasonable costs.
Under the P2B Regulation, business users of online intermediation services get a statement of reasons when they are restricted or suspended, and at least 30 days' notice before termination, with some exceptions. Whether your use of Instagram is covered depends on the facts, for example how you sell. It may apply, and it is worth raising.
Under the GDPR, you can ask Meta for a free copy of your data, including content and messages linked to the account. Meta has one month to answer.
Outside the EU, the in-app appeal and Meta's business support are your main routes.
What to avoid
- Don't pay "agency contacts" who promise reinstatement. Meta doesn't sell reversals.
- Don't hand over logins to anyone.
- Don't open a replacement Instagram account. It can be seen as evading the ban and may put your other Meta assets at risk.
If your appeal was rejected, read Instagram appeal denied. If you only have limits on reach or features, see Instagram account restricted. The Instagram hub lists everything else.
What you stand to lose
A ban on Instagram takes more than a profile. Think about what is on the account before you decide what to do.
- Years of photos, videos and posts you may not have saved anywhere else
- Messages and contacts, sometimes the only way you reach certain people
- The followers, subscribers or community you built
- Income: sales, sponsorships, payouts and the customers who find you there
- Other apps and sites where you sign in with this account
On Instagram specifically
- Instagram's help pages say a disabled account is no longer visible to others.
Deadlines that are already running
- Instagram's help pages say that if you can't access your account and still want a copy of your information, you can contact Instagram.
- Complaint to Instagram: open for at least six months from the day Instagram told you about the decision (DSA Art. 20).
- Copy of your data: free, and Instagram must answer within one month of your request (GDPR Art. 15). It is worth asking now.
Questions people ask
Does Meta Verified help with a banned Instagram business account?
Meta Verified includes access to account support, according to Meta. It may make it easier to reach a person, but it doesn't change the rules or guarantee a different result. Don't subscribe only in the hope of a reversal.
Can I still run ads if my Instagram account is disabled?
Ads are managed through Meta's ad tools, and an ad account can be restricted separately from the Instagram profile. Check Meta Business Support Home in Meta's business tools to see what is affected. If ads are restricted, look for the option to request a review there.
Can I claim lost income from Instagram?
A dispute body can order Meta to cover its fees and your reasonable costs if you win, but it doesn't award damages. Compensation for lost income is a matter for a court and depends on your case. A loss log helps either way.
Does the P2B Regulation protect my Instagram shop?
It may. The P2B Regulation protects business users of online intermediation services, and whether your Instagram use counts depends on the facts. If it applies, you are owed reasons and, in most cases, 30 days' notice before termination.
